Defining stem profile model for wood valuation of red pine in Ontario and Michigan with consideration of stand density influence on tree taper

Abstract

As part of the Canada-United States Great Lakes Stem Profile Modelling Project, established to support the local timber production process and to enable cross-border comparisons of timber volumes, here we present results of fitting Zakrzewski's (1999) stem profile model for red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) growing in Michigan, United States, and Ontario, Canada. The model was fitted as a system of simultaneous equations using a three-stage least squares regression method. Influence of stand density on red pine tree taper was explored using data from a spacing trial in Ontario.
