Abstract

There are an estimated 207,500 owners of private commercial forest land in West Virginia. They own an average of 49.8 acres each. However, fewer than 500 owners own 30 percent of the private commercial forest land. Corporations hold 25 percent of the privately owned commercial forest land in the State. Seventy-seven percent of the owners intend to harvest timber from their land. Some form of forestry assistance has been received by 11 percent of the owners. These owners hold 36 percent of the private commercial forest land in West Virginia. Sixty percent of all private forest-land owners allow some form of public recreation in their woodlands.
