Abstract

Balsam woolly adelgid is a common name for Adelges piceae (Ratzeburg), introduced by Balch (1952), which in Europe is known as the "silver fir Adelges" (referring to its native host, Abies alba Miller [Varty, 1956]. Initially, Ratzeburg described as Chermes piceae in 1884 and Boerner renamed Dreyfusia piceae in 1908. The combination Adelges piceae proposed by Annand in 1928 is now widely accepted, but the genus Dreyfusia is still sometimes used, especially in Europe.
