ALB Hazard Management and Monitoring Version 1.0: an assessment and tracking tool for Asian longhorned beetle eradications in the United States

Abstract

The Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky) poses a significant ecological and economic threat to forested landscapes. Based on the potential cost of uncontrolled infestations, countries in North America and Europe have adopted polices of eradication when breeding populations are found. In the absence of effective traps and remote sensing tools, eradication programs depend on the use of effort intensive visual surveys to identify and remove individual infested host trees. The risk of infestation on the landscape changes as surveys are conducted (reducing risk) and new infested trees are detected (increasing risk), with the method and timing of survey playing roles in risk mitigation. ALB Hazard Management and Monitoring 1.0 is a set of analysis and ArcGIS tools designed to allow managers to track changes in risk as eradication programs work to push beetle populations towards extinction, and to facilitate the analyses of planned survey programs to identify survey strategies that optimize their reduction of risk at a landscape scale.
