Environmental drivers have been significantly altered (e.g. rising atmospheric CO2 concentration, warmer temperature, and elevated nitrogen (N) deposition) and will have a wide range of impacts on future forest C sinks. However, the interactions among these environmental drivers are unclear and their effects are subject to uncertainty. We assessed the combined and interactive effects of rising CO2 concentration, climate change (temperature, precipitation), and N deposition...AuthorsWen Wang, Shuang Ma, Hong He, Zhihua Liu, Frank Thompson, Wenchi Jin, Zheng Fang Wu, Marty Spetich, Lei Wang, Song Xue, Wenguang Zhang, Xianwei WangKeywordsSourceEnvironmental Research LettersYear2019
- Our objective was to better understand how organic and inorganic nitrogen (N) forms supplied to a tree, Robinia pseudoacacia, and a perennial forb, Lupinus latifolius, affected plant growth and performance of their symbiotic, N-fixing rhizobia. In one experiment, we tested five sources of N [none; three inorganic forms (ammonium, nitrate, ammoniumnitrate); and an organic form (arginine)] in combination with or without rhizobia inoculation. We measured seedling morphology, allometry, nodule biomass, and N status. A second experiment explored combinations of supplied 15N and inoculation to...AuthorsPeng Zhang, Kas Dumroese, Jeremiah R. - First-year outplanting performance was measured in guindo santo (Eucryphia glutinosa (Poepp. & Endl.) Baill.), a Chilean endemic tree species in the Mediterranean climate zone, which is catalogued as a near-threatened species. The effects on survival of initial plant size, fertilization at establishment, and shade (with or without nurse trees) were evaluated during the first growth season. Planting guindo santo under nurse trees was the most important treatment to increase survival, compared with trees planted in full sun. We believe that the positive effects of nurse trees on survival are...AuthorsCarolina Alvarez, Manuel Acevedo, Marta Gonzalez, Kas Dumroese, Eduardo Cartes, Ivan QuirozKeywordsSourceTree Planters' Notes. 62(1-2): 35-43.Year2019
- In recent decades, container stock has become the preferred plant material to regenerate longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) forests in the southeastern United States. We evaluated the effects of container nursery treatments on early and long-term field performance in central Louisiana. Seedlings were grown in four cavity volumes (60-336 mL) with or without copper oxychloride root pruning (Cu or no-Cu) and fertilized at three nitrogen (N) rates. Across treatments, 91% of the seedlings emerged from the grass stage by the second field season, and 88% of the seedlings survived eight years...AuthorsShi-Jean S. Sung, Kas Dumroese, Jeremy R. - Nutrient loading in the fall is a practical way to improve seedling quality and has been proven to increase nutrient accumulation, translocation and utilization. Few studies have reported on the variation in free amino acids as a result of fall fertilization, especially for different seasonal needle habits (evergreen, deciduous). Therefore, a balanced two-factor factorial design with one fall fertilization treatment (10 mg N/seedling) and Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis Carr.) and Prince Rupprecht’s larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr.) seedlings was used to examine growth response...AuthorsYan Zhu, Shan Li, Caiyun Wang, Kas Dumroese, Guolei Li, Qingmei LiKeywordsSourceJournal of Forestry Research. 31(6): 2163-2169.Year2019
- Buckling Restrained Brace Frames (BRBF) are a proven and reliable method to provide an efficient lateral force resisting system for new and existing structures in earthquake prone regions. The fuse-type elements in this system facilitate stable energy dissipation at large load deformation levels. Currently, the new trend towards mass timber vertical structures creates a need for a lightweight compatible lateral force resisting system. A Buckling Restrained Brace (BRB) component is possible to construct and feasible to implement when combining a steel core with a mass timber casing herein...AuthorsColton Murphy, Chris Pantelides, Hans-Erik Blomgren, Douglas R. - Bactrocera correcta (Bezzi, 1916), commonly known as the guava fruit fly, is of concern as an invasive pest in tropical and subtropical countries. It was first recorded in China in 1982 in Yuanjiang, in southern Yunnan Province. We monitored the spread of B. correcta in the field during 2017 and 2018, and found that it had moved about 300 kilometers eastward from its known range in 2011 in Yunnan and has now entered the neighboring Guangxi Province. A species distribution model used to predict the potential distribution of B. correcta in China revealed that southern China provides the most...AuthorsXiaofei Liu, Liyun Zhang, Robert A. - Extensive bark beetle outbreaks have recently occurred in western North American forests, resulting in overstory tree mortality across millions of hectares. Annual aerial surveys are currently used to operationally monitor bark beetle induced tree mortality, though this method is subjective and can exclude some forest areas. Daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data o er a potential alternative means to develop regional tree mortality maps. Accurate methods using such data could aid natural resource managers in surveys of forests with frequent overstory...AuthorsJoseph P. Spruce, Jeffrey A. Hicke, William Hargrove, Nancy E. - Three native species of tree-infesting Agrilus (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) have regularly reached outbreak levels in the Lake States (Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin), including A. anxius Gory (bronze birch borer), A. bilineatus (Weber) (twolined chestnut borer), and A. granulatus liragus Barter & Brown (bronze poplar borer). The main host trees for these Agrilus are species of Betula for A. anxius, Castanea and Quercus for A. bilineatus, and Populus for A. granulatus liragus. Based on 197 annual forest health reports for Michigan (1950–2017, 66 years), Minnesota (1950–2017, 64 years),...AuthorsRobert A. Haack, Toby R. - Chagas disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted by triatomine insect vectors. In Guatemala, insecticide spraying is an integral part of management of the main vector, Triatoma dimidiata. Spraying typically has low efficacy, which may be due to incomplete elimination from infested houses, within-village dispersal, or influx from other villages or sylvan environments. To evaluate how these mechanisms contribute to reinfestation, we conducted a time-course analysis of T. dimidiata infestation, abundance and household genetic structure in two nearby...AuthorsSara Helms Cahan, Lucia C.
