- Changes to vegetation structure and composition in forests adapted to frequent fire have been well documented. However, little is known about changes to the spatial characteristics of vegetation in these forests. Specifically, patch sizes and detailed information linking vegetation type to specific locations and growing conditions on the landscape are lacking. - Chisholm and Fung claim that our method of estimating conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD) in recruitment is systematically biased, and present an alternative method that shows no latitudinal pattern in CNDD. We demonstrate that their approach produces strongly biased estimates of CNDD, explaining why they do not detect a latitudinal pattern. We also address their methodological concerns using an alternative distance-weighted approach, which supports our original findings of a latitudinal gradient in CNDD and a latitudinal shift in the relationship between CNDD and species abundance.AuthorsPerry S. - Burkholderia cepacia ATCC 17759, isolated from forest soils in Trinidad, accumulates large amounts of polyhydroxyalkanoate copolymers when grown on xy-lose, mannose, arabinose, other carbohydrates, and organic acid cosubstrates. - Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) is subject to high levels of sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) deposition, which can adversely affect forest vegetation and aquatic biota. - Wood-decaying fungi tend to have characteristic substrate ranges that partly define their ecological niche. Fomitopsis pinicola is a brown rot species of Polyporales that is reported on 82 species of softwoods and 42 species of hardwoods. - Aerodynamic canopy height (ha) is the effective height of vegetation canopy for its influence on atmospheric fluxes and is a key parameter of surface-atmosphere coupling. However, methods to estimate ha from data are limited. This synthesis evaluates the applicability and robustness of the calculation of ha from eddy covariance momentum-flux data. - A novel class of high performance polymer porous aerogel flm-based triboelectric nanogenerators (A-NGs) is demonstrated. The A-NGs, made of a pair of highly porous polymer flms, exhibit much higher triboelectric outputs than the corresponding dense polymer flm-based triboelectric nanogenerators (D-NGs) under the same mechanical stress.
