Displaying 13,261 - 13,270 of 65,196 Publications- Imagery from the Landsat Program has been used frequently as a source of auxiliary data for modeling land cover, as well as a variety of attributes associated with tree cover. With ready access to all scenes in the archive since 2008 due to the USGS Landsat Data Policy, new approaches to deriving such auxiliary data from dense Landsat time series are required. Several methods have previously been developed for use with finer temporal resolution imagery (e.g. AVHRR and MODIS), including image compositing and harmonic regression using Fourier series. The manuscript presents a study, using...AuthorsBarry T. (Ty) Wilson, Joseph F. Knight, Ronald E. McRobertsKeywordsSourceISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. 137: 29-46.Year2018
- Natural resource managers of federal lands in the USA are often tasked with various forms of social and economic impact analysis. Federal agencies in the USA also have a mandate to analyze the potential environmental justice consequences of their activities. Relatively little is known about the environmental justice impacts of natural resource management in rural areas. Quantitative environmental justice analyses have so far heavily favored urban populations, in part owing to the difficulty of quantitative analysis of rural U.S. Census data. We developed a spatial method for integrating...AuthorsMark Adams, Susan CharnleyKeywordsSourceApplied Geography. 90: 257-271.Year2018
- Forests of the Midwest and Northeast significantly define the character, culture, and economy of this large region but face an uncertain future as the climate continues to change. Forests vary widely across the region, and vulnerabilities are strongly influenced by regional differences in climate impacts and adaptive capacity. Not all forests are vulnerable; longer growing seasons and warmer temperatures will increase suitable habitat and biomass for many temperate species. Upland systems dominated by oak species generally have low vulnerability due to greater tolerance of hot and dry...AuthorsChris Swanston, Leslie Brandt, Maria Janowiak, Stephen Handler, Patricia Butler-Leopold, Louis Iverson, Frank R. - A national assessment of how the number of parcel owners influence family forest land management and use decisions in the US was conducted using a subset of the US Forest Service's National Woodland Owner Survey Dataset. Seventy-two percent of single parcel family forest land ownership respondents of at least 4.05 ha had multiple owners. The extent to which past land management practices and future intentions for the land are influenced by the number of owners of an individual parcel was evaluated. We also examined how landowner decisionmaking networks are related to past practices and...AuthorsStephanie Snyder, Michael A. KilgoreKeywordsSourceSmall-scale Forestry. 17(1): 1-23.Year2018
- Coal is the primary fuel source for electrical power generation in interior Alaska, with more than 600,000 tons burned annually at five different power plants. Woody biomass could be used as part of this fuel mix, offering potential environmental and economic benefits. In this research, debarked chips were cofired with locally mined coal at the Aurora Power Plant facility in downtown Fairbanks, Alaska. During two days of testing, aspen chips were successfully cofired with coal at average rates of 2.4 percent and 4.8 percent of total energy value. Combustion gases were analyzed during...AuthorsDavid L. Nicholls, Zackery Wright, Daisy HuangKeywordsSourceGen. Tech. Rep. PNW-GTR-964. - Nitrogen deposition alters forest ecosystems particularly in high elevation, montane habitats where nitrogen deposition is greatest and continues to increase. We collected soils across an elevational (788–1940 m) gradient, encompassing both abiotic (soil chemistry) and biotic (vegetation community) gradients, at eight locations in the southern Appalachian Mountains of southwestern North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. We measured soil chemistry (total N, C, extractable PO4, soil pH, cation exchange capacity [ECEC], percent base saturation [% BS]) and dissected soil fungal communities using...AuthorsAllison M. - The purpose of this study was to develop test data needed to characterize lateral load performance of structural insulated panel (SIP) walls with full bearing (restrained). The research program involved structural testing of 29 full-size SIP walls (8 ft tall by 8 ft long) of various configurations that bracket a range of SIP wall configurations commonly used in the field. Results indicated that the cyclic performance parameters for all walls tested in this study met the over-strength and ductility capacities of ICC-ES AC04, although some walls had drift capacities slightly lower than the...AuthorsBoren Yeh, Tom Skaggs, Xiping Wang, Tom WilliamsonKeywordsSourceGen. - An extended plate and beam (EP&B) design was developed at Home Innovation Research Labs (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) in an effort to provide traditional light-frame wall construction details that are compatible with continuous insulating sheathing. This would encourage wide-spread adoption of high-R walls and promote greater energy efficiency in new houses. The new wall design provides significant increases in insulation and ensures moisture management while relying on common methods and materials for framing, insulation, and siding attachment. It incorporates the use of foam sheathing...AuthorsPatricia Gunderson, Vladimir Kochkin, Xiping WangKeywordsSourceGen. Tech. Rep. FPL-GTR-250.
