- The Forest Vegetation Simulator Fire and Fuels Extension (FFE-FVS) is often used to estimate canopy bulk density (CBD) and canopy base height (CBH), which are key indicators of crown fire hazard for conifer stands in the Western United States. Estimated CBD from FFE-FVS is calculated as the maximum 4 m running mean bulk density of predefined 0.3 m thick canopy layers (Sando and Wick 1972). Canopy base height is estimated in a similar fashion as the lowest height at which the running mean bulk density of canopy layers exceeds a predefined threshold of 0.011 kg m-3 (Scott and Reinhardt...AuthorsSeth Ex, Frederick Smith, Tara L. - This magazine article is an informal review of a wide range of research, spanning multiple decades, concerning human health benefits derived from experiences of nearby nature in urbanized places. The actionable information is aimed at professional and manager audiences who may have an interest in urban design and planning, as well as urban forestry. The article begins with a historical overview of the evolution of infrastructure systems in cities, spanning the time from ‘filthy cities’ to implementation of grey infrastructure to contemporary green infrastructure innovations. It promotes an...AuthorsKathleen WolfKeywordsSourceArborist News. 26(4): 40–43.Year2017
- Introduction: Interrelated social and ecological challenges demand an understanding of how environmental change and management decisions affect human well-being. This paper outlines a framework for measuring human well-being for ecosystem-based management (EBM). We present a prototype that can be adapted and developed for various scales and contexts. Scientists and managers use indicators to assess status and trends in integrated ecosystem assessments (IEAs). To improve the social science rigor and success of EBM, we developed a systematic and transparent approach for evaluating indicators...AuthorsSara Jo Breslow, Margaret Allen, Danielle Holstein, Brit Sojka, Raz Barnea, Xavier Basurto, Courtney Carothers, Susan Charnley, Sarah Coulthard, Nives Dolšak, Jamie Donatuto, Carlos García-Quijano, Christina C.
