Reliable estimates of carbon stocks are pivotal for understanding the global carbon balance and for promoting initiatives to mitigate CO2 emissions through forest management. There are numerous studies employing allometric regression models that convert inventory into aboveground biomass (AGB) and carbon (C). Yet the majority of allometric regression models do not consider the root system nor do these equations provide detail...AuthorsKatherine Sinacore, Jefferson Scott Hall, Catherine Potvin, Alejandro A. - The Aquatic and Riparian Effectiveness Monitoring Program focuses on assessing the degree to which federal land management under the aquatic conservation strategy (ACS) of the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) has been effective in maintaining and improving watershed conditions. We used stream sampling data and upslope/riparian geographic information system (GIS) and remote-sensing data to evaluate condition for sixth-field watersheds in each aquatic province within the NWFP area. Stream conditions were evaluated based on sampling data collected from 2002 to 2013 (214 watersheds) as part of an...AuthorsStephanie A. Miller, Sean Gordon, Peter Eldred, Ronald M. - In investing in a new venture, companies aim to increase their competitiveness and generate value in scenarios where volatile markets, geopolitical instabilities, and disruptive technologies create uncertainty and risk. The biobased industry poses additional challenges as it competes in a mature, highly efficient market, dominated by petroleum-based companies, and faces signifi cant feedstock availability and variability constraints, limited technological data, and uncertain market conditions for newly developed products. Thus, decision-making strategies and processes for these investment...AuthorsCamilla Abbati de Assis, Ronalds Gonzalez, Stephen Kelley, Hasan Jameel, Ted Bilek, Jesse Daystar, Robert Handfield, Jay Golden, Jeffrey P. - Thousand cankers disease (TCD), caused by the walnut twig beetle (WTB), Pityophthorus juglandis, and its associated fungal symbiont, Geosmithia morbida, is a disease of economic and ecological concern on eastern black walnut, Juglans nigra. Numerous attacks and gallery formation by the WTB and subsequent development of cankers caused by the fungus result in progressive crown dieback. The disease can kill affected trees in a few to several years following initial infestation and very few management options are available for preventing or reducing impact of TCD on black walnut trees. Since...AuthorsLouela A. Castrillo, Albert (Bud) E. Mayfield, Michael H. Griggs, Robert Camp, Bryan Mudder, Adam Taylor, John D. VandenbergKeywordsSourceBiological ControlYear2017
- Host innate immunity is one of the factors that determines the resistance of insects to their entomopathogens. In the research reported here we studied whether or not phenoloxidase (PO), a key enzyme in the melanogenesis component of humoral immunity of insects, plays a role in the protection of Lymantria dispar larvae from infection by L. dispar multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus. We studied two types of viral infection: overt and covert. The following lines of investigation were tested: i) the intravital individual estimation of baseline PO activity in haemolymph plasma followed by virus...AuthorsNikita S. Kasianov, Irina A. - This study was to explore the conversion of low-cost bio-residuals into high value-added cellulose nanocrystals. Two enzymatic hydrolyzed residuals (i.e., HRMMW and HRSPW) were collected from two different bio-ethanol producing processes—hydrolyzing medium-milled wood (MMW) and hydrolyzing acid sulfite pretreated wood (SPW), respectively. The results showed that both residuals contained over 20 wt % glucan with a crystallinity of about 30%, confirming the existence of cellulose in a well-organized structure in two bio-residuals. The cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were successfully extracted...AuthorsLanxing Du, Jinwu Wang, Yang Zhang, Chusheng Qi, Michael Wolcott, Zhiming YuKeywordsSourceNanomaterials. 7(3): 1-12Year2017
- Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) has been recognized within indigenous communities for millennia; however, traditional ecological knowledge has received growing attention within the western science (WS) paradigm over the past twenty-five years. Federal agencies, national organizations, and university programs dedicated to natural resource management are beginning to realize the critical need to incorporate different ways of knowing into their natural resource management decisions. Furthermore, Native American tribes on a national scale are assuming greater leadership through self-dete...AuthorsSerra J. HoaglandKeywordsSourceIK: Other Ways of Knowing. 3(1): 1-15.Year2017
- The Pigorini cemí is an icon of Caribbean colonial history, reflecting early trans-Atlantic crosscultural exchanges. Although well documented, the piece has received surprisingly little systematic study. We present the first structural analysis and radiocarbon dating of the sculpture (modelled at AD 1492–1524), and a brief discussion of the materials from which it is comprised. These include indigenous shell and European glass beads, newly identified feather and hair fibres, and the enigmatic rhinoceros-horn mask carved as a human face. We also address the sculpture’s hidden internal...AuthorsJoanna Ostapkowicz, Fiona Brock, Alex C. Wiedenhoeft, Rick Schulting, Donatella SaviolaSourceAntiquity. 91(359): 1314-1329.Year2017
- Currently, feedstock size effects on chemical pretreatment performance were not clear due to the complexity of the pretreatment process and multiple evaluation standards such as the sugar recovery in spent liquor or enzymatic digestibility. In this study, we evaluated the size effects by various ways: the sugar recovery and coproduct yields in spent liquor, the chemical and thermal properties, and enzymatic digestibility of the pretreated solids. Four initial particle sizes were employed and characterized with the geometric mean diameters, which were 10.40, 2.25, 1.49, and 0.84 mm. The...AuthorsYalan Liu, Jinwu Wang, Michael P. - tMechanical pretreatment is an effective process for chemical or biochemical conversion of woodybiomass. The deconstruction features of the wood cell wall play an important role in its chemical or bio-chemical processing. In this work, we evaluated the wood cell wall fracture in the early stage of mechanicalpretreatment process conducted with various initial moisture contents. Electronic microscopy (i.e., SEMand TEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to visualize the cellular structurechanges due to cell wall fractures. Results reveal that the enzymatic digestibility...AuthorsJinxue Jiang, Jinwu Wang, Xiao Zhang, Michael WolcottKeywordsSourceIndustrial Crops and Products. 97: 498-508.Year2017
