Displaying 14,331 - 14,340 of 65,158 Publications- Lignin samples fractionated from microwave liquefied switchgrass were applied in the preparation of semirigid polyurethane (PU) foams without purification. The objective of this study was to elucidate the influence of lignin in the PU matrix on themorphological, chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of thePU foams. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that lignin with 5 and 10% content in the PU foams did not influence the cell shape and size. The foam cell size became larger by increasing the lignin content to 15%. - The thermal decomposition characteristics of microwave liquefied rape straw residues with respect to liquefaction condition and pyrolysis conversion were investigated using a thermogravimetric (TG) analyzer at the heating rates of 5, 20, 50 °C min-1. The hemicellulose decomposition peak was absent at the derivative thermogravimetric analysis (DTG) curve of liquefied residues, because it had been decomposed during the liquefaction. Furthermore, among the liquefied residues, the one from the reaction condition of 180 °C/15 min had the highest thermal stability under a high temperature (>700...AuthorsXingyan Huang, Cornelis F. - Microwave-assisted liquefaction of rape straw in methanol was conducted to collect the liquefied residues for the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs).The liquefied residue with content of 23.44% from 180∘C/7.5 min was used to fibrillate CNCs with dilute alkali (2% NaOH) and hydrogen peroxide (5% H2O2) treatments, followed by ultrasonication for 15 min. The FT-IR spectra and SEM images revealed that the liquefied residue from 180∘C/7.5 min exhibited a relatively homogeneous texture and a huge surface with cellulose as core structure. The retained hemicelluloses and other impurities...AuthorsXingyan Huang, Cornelis F. - The acid-catalyzed liquefaction of rape straw in methanol using microwave energy was examined. Conversion yield and energy consumption were evaluated to profile the microwave-assisted liquefaction process. Chemical components of the bio-oils from various liquefaction conditions were identified. A higher reaction temperature was found to be beneficial to obtain higher energy consumption efficiency as heated by microwaves. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the bio-oils indicated that hydroxyl groups underwent oxidation with increasing liquefaction temperature and/or prolonged...AuthorsXing-Yan Huang, Feng Li, Jiu-Long Xie, Cornelis F. - Climate models predict increasing drought intensity and frequency for many regions, which may have negative consequences for tree recruitment, growth and mortality, as well as forest ecosystem services. Furthermore, practical strategies for minimizing vulnerability to drought are limited. Tree population density, a metric of tree abundance in a given area, is a primary driver of competitive intensity among trees, which influences tree growth and mortality. Manipulating tree population density may be a mechanism for moderating drought-induced stress and growth reductions, although the...AuthorsAlessandra Bottero, Anthony W. D'Amato, Brian J. J. - The objective of this study was to find an effective method for converting renewable biomass-derived phenolic compounds into hydrocarbons bio-fuel via in situ catalytic hydrodeoxygenation. The in situ hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived phenolic compounds was carried out in methanol-water solvent over bifunctional catalysts of Raney Ni and HZSM-5 or H-Beta. In the in situ hydrodeoxygenation, the hydrogen was donated by aqueous phase reforming of methanol without external hydrogen gas. This reaction pathway for liquid-phase in situ hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic monomers was based on...AuthorsJunfeng Feng, Chung Hse, Zhongzhi Yang, Kui Wang, Jianchun Jiang, Junming XuKeywordsSourceApplied Catalysis A: GeneralYear2017
- Directional microwave-assisted liquefaction and stepwise extraction are introduced for producing platform chemicals: aromatics and monosaccharides. When sulfuric acid was used as a catalyst, a 45% monosaccharides yield and a 29% aromatics yield were obtained from bamboo with 0.3 g catalyst per 18 g methanol and 2 g bamboo at 160 °C with 10 min. Approximately 78–86 wt% of the six biomass materials were converted into liquid products. After the stepwise extraction and precipitation process, the yields of monosaccharide derivatives and three phenolic compound fractions were 39–45% and 28–32%,...AuthorsJunfeng Feng, Chungyun Hse, Zhongzhi Yang, Kui Wang, Jianchun Jiang, Junming XuKeywordsSourceBioresource TechnologyYear2017
- Phenolic compounds derived from biomass are important feedstocks for the sustainable production of hydrocarbon biofuels. Hydrodeoxygenation is an effective process to remove oxygen-containing functionalities in phenolic compounds. This paper reported a simple method for producing hydrocarbons by liquefying biomass and upgrading liquefied products. Three phenolic compounds fractions (1#, 2#, and 3#) were separated from liquefied biomass with stepwise precipitation and extraction. Based on HSQC NMR analysis, three phenolic compounds fractions were mainly comprised of aromatic and phenolic...AuthorsJunfeng Feng, Chung Hse, Kui Wang, Zhongzhi Yang, Jianchun Jiang, Junming XuKeywordsSourceEnergyYear2017
- Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), a tree of the legume family (Fabaceae), is native to the southern Appalachian Mountains (Pennsylvania to Alabama), Ozark Plateau, and mid-south (Fig. 1). Black locust wood is utilized for firewood, fence posts, and building due to its strength and durability. The prolific pealike blossoms are aesthetically pleasing and provide nectar for bees and butterflies (Fig. 2). Within and outside of its native range, black locust has been extensively planted for ornamental purposes and land reclamation where its ability to fix nitrogen helps increase soil...AuthorsCassandra Kurtz, Mark H. - Guidelines for managing sugar maple-dominated forests by the single-tree selection method are well established and widely adopted. The forests of the Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin provide an opportunity to validate current guidelines by testing tree value and size/age relationships in forests that have substantially older and larger high-quality trees than can be found through the northern region. We harvested grade 1 sugar maple trees across a wide spectrum of ages and diameters, which we then manufactured into veneer, sawlogs, cants, and hardwood/pulpwood bolts to determine tree value....AuthorsDaniel C.
