Context There is a need to better sort logs according to lumber quality for improved decision making and wood utilization because merchantable logs are being harvested from different stand types including natural forests, conventional plantations, and intensively managed plantations, all with differences in rotation ages, growth rates, and wood quality traits....AuthorsMark Alexander Butler, Joseph Dahlen, Thomas L. - We examine the impact of measurement errors in geocoding of property locations and in the assessment of Mountain Pine Beetle-induced tree damage within the proximity of a given residence on estimated losses in home values. For our sample of homes in the wildland-urban interface of the Colorado front range and using a novel matching estimator with Bayesian regression adjustment we find that both types of errors can lead to substantial biases in estimated losses. Our results confirm that the Forest Service's Aerial Detection Survey is generally too coarse to be informative for property...AuthorsKlaus Moeltner, Christine E. - Counts of avian fledglings, nestlings, or clutch size that are bounded below by zero and above by some small integer form a discrete random variable distribution that is not approximated well by conventional parametric count distributions such as the Poisson or negative binomial. We developed a logistic quantile regression model to provide estimates of the empirical conditional distribution of a bounded discrete random variable. The logistic quantile regression model requires that counts are randomly jittered to a continuous random variable, logit transformed to bound them between specified...AuthorsBrian S. Cade, Barry R. - There has been an explosion of interest during the past two decades in a class of nonmarket stated-preference valuation methods known as choice experiments. The overall objective of a choice experiment is to estimate economic values for characteristics (or attributes) of an environmental good that is the subject of policy analysis, where the environmental good or service comprises several characteristics. Including price as a characteristic permits a multidimensional, preference-based valuation surface to be estimated for use in benefit-cost analysis or any other application of nonmarket...AuthorsTom Holmes, Wiktor L Adamawicz, Fredrik CarlssonKeywordsSourceIn: A Primer on Non-market Valuation (2nd Edition), P Champ, K Boyle, T Brown (editors). - Hidden biodiversity is revealed in this study of California's subterranean fauna, which contains distinctive elements that differentiate it from other North American regions. Since 1975, the rate of discovery of new species has accelerated with funded projects in most of the important cave areas of the state, including our own studies. Here we compile all available biological records for subterranean sites in California dating back to 1840.AuthorsWilliam R. Elliott, James R. Reddell, Craig Rudolph, G.O. Graening, Thomas S. - The Louisiana Pinesnake (Pituophis ruthveni) is a large, heavy-bodied snake with adults reaching a size of 121.9–152.4 cm in length (Boundy and Carr 2017; Werler and Dixon 2000). Male snakes reach slightly larger sizes than females (Himes et al. 2002). Neonates of Pituophis ruthveni are, on average, the largest neonates of any North American snake, reaching 55 cm or larger (Reichling 1988, 1990).AuthorsConnor S. Adams, Josh B. - In environmental research (i.e., plant ecophysiology, environmental microbiology, and environmental chemistry), some assays require incubation of samples at controlled temperature and darkness. Until now, due to a lack of equipment providing such possibility in situ, researchers had to move collected samples to the laboratory for incubation. Obviously, a delayed incubation and the ex situ conditions could seriously affect the assays’ results. A good example of analysis where water bath use is needed is the nitrate reductase activity (NRA) in vivo assay where plant tissue samples are...AuthorsAdam Rajsz, Bronisław Wojtuń, Andrzej BytnerowiczKeywordsSourceEnvironmental Monitoring and AssessmentYear2017
- Fungi are key players in the health, diversity, and productivity of forest ecosystems in Pacific Northwest forests, as mycorrhizal associations, pathogens, decomposers, nontimber resources, and food resources for wildlife. A number of invertebrate species are associated with wood decay fungi, serve as vectors for fungal pathogens, or are fungivorous (consume fungi) and influence rates of wood decay and nutrient mineralization. In Washington and Oregon, 31 wildlife species among 8 families are fungivores, and at least 14 wildlife species disperse fungi. Down wood can provide nurse substrates...AuthorsBruce G. - To be uncertain is to be unsure or have doubt. Results from a random sample survey show the majority (89.5%) of farmers in the Upper Midwest perceived there was too much uncertainty about the impacts of climate to justify changing their agricultural practices and strategies, despite scientific evidence regarding the causes and potential consequences of climate change. This study uses random sample survey data (n = 4,778) and in-depth interviews (n = 159) of Upper Midwest farmers to better understand factors that underlie their uncertainty and reluctance to take adaptive action. - Forest landscape models (FLM) are increasingly used to project the effects of climate change on forested landscapes, yet most use phenomenological approaches with untested assumptions about future forest dynamics. We used a FLM that relies on first principles to mechanistically simulate growth (LANDIS-II with PnET-Succession) to systematically explore how landscapes composed of tree species with various life history traits respond to individual climate and abiotic drivers. Moderate temperature rise (+3 °C) concurrent with rising CO2 concentration increased net photosynthesis of cohorts,...AuthorsEric J. Gustafson, Brian R. Miranda, Arjan M.G. De Bruijn, Brian R.
