Displaying 14,421 - 14,430 of 65,155 Publications- Forested watersheds provide approximately 80% of freshwater drinking resources in the United States (Fox et al. 2007). The water originating from forested watersheds is typically of high quality when compared to agricul¬tural watersheds, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus are nine times higher, on average, in agricultur¬al watersheds when compared to forested watersheds (Fox et al. 2007). Silvicultural activities typically occur on a low percentage of forested lands in any one year, and effects on water quality from silvicultural operations are typically localized and short-lived...AuthorsBenjamin Rau, Augustine Muwamba, Carl C. - Climate change is altering the distribution of foundation species, with potential effects on organisms that inhabit these environments and changes to valuable ecosystem functions. In the Gulf of Mexico, black mangroves (Avicennia germinans) are expanding northward into salt marshes dominated by Spartina alterniflora (hereafter Spartina). Salt marshes are essential habitats for many organisms, including ecologically and economically important species such as blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and Penaeid shrimp (e.g., Penaeus aztecus), which may be affected by vegetation changes. - Background: Analysis of volatile metabolites derived from the human breath or biofluids provides noninvasive means of detecting and monitoring diseases that occur throughout the body. Diseases arise from different mechanisms that cause alterations in normal physiological processes. Mechanisms of disease (pathogenesis) result in the production of unique mixtures of abnormal volatile organic compounds (VOCs), referred to as disease biomarker metabolites when associated with specificdiseases. Regardless of where disease biomarkers originate in the body, they are picked up by the circulatory...AuthorsDan D. WilsonKeywordsSourceCurrent MetabolomicsYear2017
- The aim of the study is to compare direct outflow from storm events estimated using modifications of original SCS-CN procedure. The study was conducted in a mountainous catchment of Kamienica River and a highland catchment draining Stobnica River located in Upper Vistula water region, both in Poland, and a headwater lowland watershed WS80 located at the Santee Experimental Forest in South Carolina, USA. For estimating the event outflows for the Kamienica and Stobnica River basins, the initial data on observed rainfall-runoff events for years 1980-2012 were obtained from Institute of...AuthorsA. - The formation of traumatic resin ducts (TRDs) represents an important induced defense in woody plants that enhances oleoresin production and flow in response to environmental perturbations. In some genera (Pinus), resin ducts are copious and conspicuous; however, in others (Picea), resin ducts are relatively rare. The occurrence and strength of resin ducts, in particular TRDs, in annually resolved rings could be used to reconstruct mechanical damage associated with natural disturbances. We analyzed tree-ring data from paired live and dead Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii Parry ex...AuthorsR. Justin DeRose, Matthew F. Bekker, James N. - The distribution and abundance of obligate grassland breeding birds in the US have declined across the Great Plains as native habitats have been converted to intensive human land use. A major finding of Scholtz et al. (2017: Table 3) was that the group-wise extinction rate among 13 common grassland nesting birds declined with increasing cropland. This conclusion runs counter to expectations and may be attributable to an artefact of flawed data or analyses. Here, we outline four concerns that may be contributing to the counter-intuitive association.AuthorsCurtis H. - We examined multiple environmental factors related to climate change that affect cattle production on rangelands to identify sources of vulnerability among seven regions of the western United States. Climate change effects were projected to 2100 using published spatially explicit model output for four indicators of vulnerability: forage quantity, vegetation type trajectory, heat stress, and interannual forage variability. Departure of projections from the baseline (2001-2010) was used to estimate vulnerability of present-day cattle operations. The analysis indicated 1) an increase in...AuthorsMatt C. - Mangroves are an important terrestrial carbon reservoir with numerous ecosystem services. Yet, it is difficult to inventory mangroves because of their low accessibility. A sampling approach that produces accurate assessment while maximizing logistical integrity of inventory operation is often required. Spatial decision support systems (SDSSs) provide support for integrating such a sampling design of fieldwork with operational considerations and evaluation of alternative scenarios. However, this fieldwork design driven by SDSS is often computationally intensive and repetitive. In this...AuthorsWenwu Tang, Wenpeng Feng, Meijuan Jia, Jiyang Shi, Huifang Zuo, Christina Stringer, Carl C. TrettinKeywordsSourceInternational Journal of Geographical Information ScienceYear2017
- Aspen ecosystems are valued because they add biodiversity and ecological value to the landscape. They provide rich and productive habitats and increase aesthetic value. Climate change poses the risk of altering and disrupting these ecosystems, and it may worsen the effects of non-climate stressors. To provide scientific information for land managers facing the challenge of helping aspen ecosystems adapt to climate change, we developed an aspen vulnerability assessment on the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache and Ashley National Forests. Literature-based information and expert elicitation are used to...AuthorsJanine Rice, Tim Bardsley, Pete Gomben, Dustin Bambrough, Stacey Weems, Allen Huber, Linda A. JoyceKeywordsSourceGen. Tech. - Significant progress in the development of portable electronic devices is showing considerable promise to facilitate clinical diagnostic processes. The increasing global trend of shifts in healthcare policies and priorities toward shortening and improving the effectiveness of diagnostic procedures by utilizing non-invasive methods should provide multiple benefits of increasing treatment efficiency and lowering healthcare costs while accelerating the speed and accuracy of diagnoses. The results of this improved approach will lead to earlier treatments that ultimately result in more favorable...AuthorsDan D. WilsonSourceAnnals of Clinical Case ReportsYear2017
