A tornado safe room ceiling panel and door were static-pressure-tested according to ASTM E 330 using a vacuum test system. Re-sults indicate that the panels had load capacities from 2.4 to 3.5 times that required by the wind pressure calculations of ASCE 7. The panels sustained no damage at these elevated load levels.AuthorsRobert H. Falk, Deepak ShresthaSourceResearch Paper FPL-RP-688. - Animals may partially overcome environmental constraints on fitness by behaviorally adjusting their exposure to costs and supplies of energy. Few studies, however, have linked spatiotemporal variation in the energy landscape to behaviorally mediated measures of performance that ostensibly influence individual fitness. We hypothesized that strength of selection by North American elk (Cervus elaphus) for areas that reduced costs of thermoregulation and activity, and increased access to highquality forage, would influence four energetically mediated traits related to fitness: birth mass of...AuthorsRyan A. - Sediment budgets describe the input, transport, storage, and export of sediment in a geomorphic system. Such budgets can be used to address questions regarding how changes in catchment conditions affect channels, how long the effects will last, and what the sequence of responses will be. This chapter defines and describes budget components, outlines strategies and procedures for quantifying components, and provides a guide to published descriptions of various aspects of sediment budget construction.AuthorsLeslie M. - African mahogany (Khaya spp.) has attracted the interest of the timber market in Brazil because of the quality of the wood and the similarity to the highly demanded, Brazilian mahogany (S. macrophylla King). The goal of this study was to examine natural resistance of plantation-grown African mahogany (Khaya spp.) to decay fungi and termite feeding, in order to better evaluate the potential use of this material as a suitable replacement for Brazilian mahogany wood. Heartwood and sapwood of two African mahogany species, Khaya ivorensis and Khaya senegalensis, were evaluated for resistance to...AuthorsTâmara Suely Filgueira Amorim França, Frederico José Nistal França, Rachel A. - Many managed northern hardwood forests are characterized by low-diversity tree regeneration. Small harvest gaps, competition from shrub–herb vegetation, and browsing by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) contribute to this pattern, but we know little about how these factors interact. With a stand-scale experiment, we examined the effects of gap size (0-3234 m2), vegetation (weeded:unweeded), and deer (fenced:unfenced) on seedling growth and survival for 18 tree species. With increasing gap size and light, shrub–herb vegetation density increased, while deer browsing on seedlings in...AuthorsMichael B. Walters, Evan J. Farinosi, John L. Willis, Kurt W. - An experiment was conducted to concentrate on the rainfall interception process of individual trees for four common species in Beijing, China, which included needle species (Platycladus orientalis and Pinus tabulaeformis) and broadleaf species (Quercus variabilis and Acer truncatum). Two types of interception storages, the maximum (Cmax) and the minimum interception storage (Cmin), were examined at four simulated rainfall intensities (from 11.7 to 78.5 mm h−1). Results showed that an average of 91% of Cmax for all the species was intercepted during the first 10 minutes of rainfall, while...AuthorsXiang Li, Jianzhi Niu, Linus Zhang, Qingfu Xiao, E. - Biological control researchers commonly avoid targets with potential for high conflict, but for certain highly damaging invaders with no viable management alternatives, it may be necessary to consider biological control even when it is likely to generate conflict. Discussed here is a case study, strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) in Hawaii, in which conflicting views of the targeted plant engendered substantial opposition to biological control. The processes followed and lessons learned may be useful for others considering biological control as a management option for widespread...AuthorsTracy JohnsonKeywordsSourceIn: Van Driesche, R.G.;Simberloff, D.; Blossey, B.; Causton, C.; Hoddle, M.S.; Wagner, D.L.; Marks, C.O.; Heinz, K.M.; Warner, K.D., eds. - This paper presents selected results of connector testing and wall testing which were part of a Forest Products Lab-funded project undertaken at Colorado State University in an effort to determine seismic performance factors for cross laminated timber (CLT) shear walls in the United States. Archetype development, which is required as part of the process, is also discussed. Connector tests were performed on generic angle brackets which were tested under shear and uplift and performed as expected with consistent nail withdrawal observed. Quasi-static cyclic tests were conducted on CLT shear...AuthorsM. Omar Amini, John W. van de Lindt, Douglas R. - Here we used dilute oxalic acid to pretreat a kraft bleached Eucalyptus pulp (BEP) fibers to facilitate mechanical fibrillation in producing cellulose nanofibrils using disk milling with substantial mechanical energy savings. We successfully applied a reaction kinetics based combined hydrolysis factor (CHFx) as a severity factor to quantitatively control xylan dissolution and BEP fibril deploymerization. More importantly, we were able to accurately predict the degree of polymerization (DP) of disk-milled fibrils using CHFx and milling time or milling energy consumption. - Cellulose nanomaterials have a number of interesting and unique properties that make them well-suited for use in electronics applications such as energy harvesting devices, actuators and sensors. Cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals have good mechanical properties, high transparency, and low coefficient of thermal expansion, among other properties that facilitate both active and inactive roles in electronics and related devices. For example, these nanomaterials have been demonstrated to operate as substrates for flexible electronics and displays, to improve the efficiency of photovoltaics...AuthorsRonald C.
