In the severe blowdown areas all trees in the mixed shortleaf pine–hardwood forest were uprooted or broken, with no relationship between tree species or size and whether uprooting or breakage occurred. There was also no significant relationship between tree species and amount of soil displaced, and only a weak relationship between tree size and rootwad size. - Global forests are increasingly affected by land-use change, fragmentation, changing management objectives, and degradation. In this paper we broadly characterize trends in global forest area by intensity of management, and provide an overview of changes in global carbon stocks associated with managed forests. - A dominant-tree thinning was conducted in 2003 in a 69-year-old even-aged northern hardwood stand, clearcut in about 1935, where a precommercial thinning study had been conducted in 1959. The 2003 commercial thinning concentrated on the removal of the early maturing, short-lived paper birch and aspen, the largest-diameter trees in the stand (hence the term "dominant-tree thinning"). - Global Positioning System (GPS) units used in animal telemetry often suffer from nonrandom data loss and location error. GPS units use stored satellite information to estimate locations, including almanac and ephemeris data reflecting satellite positions at weekly and at <4-hr temporal scales, respectively.
