Implementing NBS in urban residential areas relies on the availability of unsealed soil surfaces. Here we investigate how soil is distributed at fine spatial scales across Los Angeles County, the second largest metropolitan area in the United States, to examine the potential for NBS to be realized equitably. We delineate soil patches in residential areas across a range of socioeconomic settings and urban forms, and then compare soil patch metrics to social...AuthorsAdam Berland, Dustin L. - Traits enabling fire tolerance are essential for plant persistence in fire-prone ecosystems. Yet, fire tolerance alone fails to account for other pre-existing forms of stress that could modify species tolerance of fire. Shade is an increasingly important form of stress on the contemporary forested landscape, as widespread fire exclusion has hastened the transition of many open woodlands into closed canopy forests. To investigate the interaction of fire and shade in the longleaf pine ecosystem, we established a shade house experiment examining seedling mortality and recovery of six native...AuthorsJohn Willis, Ajay Sharma, Timothy M. - Rapidly maturing frameworks for investing in and committing to mitigation of climate change through forest management have focused almost exclusively on the benefits of carbon sequestration, without accounting for collateral changes in geophysical factors such as surface albedo. Newly available 30m albedo retrievals derived from imagery acquired by the Landsat 8 satellite, analysed at 273,652 field plots monitored by the United States Forest Service, suggests that large areas of the U.S. Inter-Mountain West’s forests have a net warming impact on the planet’s surface energy balance. For the...AuthorsSean P. Healey, Zhiqiang Yang, Angela Erb, Ryan M. Bright, Grant M. Domke, Tracey Frescino, Crystal B. - Innovative floodplain reconnection actions are being implemented in various river systems, with the goal of restoring natural processes that support dynamic floodplains, rivers, and aquatic ecosystems. But how effective are these restoration actions? Aquatic macroinvertebrates respond quickly to flow, substrate, and temperature changes. Therefore, we examined the response of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages to an intensive river and floodplain restoration project in the South Fork McKenzie River of western Oregon (U.S.A.) for 3 years (spring and fall each year) following implementation...AuthorsShannon Claeson, Rebecca Flitcroft, Kate MeyerKeywordsSourceRestoration Ecology. 33(5): e70079.Year2025
- Congeneric fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) and eastern gray squirrels (S. carolinensis) compete for resources within North American temperate forests. Both species exhibit regional variation in morphology and behavior—potentially due to differences in geography, community composition, or ecological pressures between forested regions. While many have studied these species in other forested regions of the United States, recent assessments of partitioning between these species in Central Hardwood forests remain scarce. We investigated spatial and temporal partitioning between squirrel species...AuthorsJustin Remmers, Damon B. Lesmeister, Clayton K. NielsenKeywordsSourceJournal of Mammalogy. 106(2): 323-338.Year2025
- Aim: The urgency for remote, reliable and scalable biodiversity monitoring amidst mounting human pressures on ecosystems has sparked worldwide interest in Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM), which can track life underwater and on land. However, we lack a unified methodology to report this sampling effort and a comprehensive overview of PAM coverage to gauge its potential as a global research and monitoring tool. To address this gap, we created the Worldwide Soundscapes project, a collaborative network and growing database comprising metadata from 416 datasets across all realms (terrestrial,...AuthorsKevin F. - From August 29 to September 25, 2023, I took part in an organized group trip through Indonesia, where I talked to locals about their cultural views on owls. This is a summary of my findings. My trip covered parts of southern Borneo (Tanjung Harapan National Park, Sekonyer Village and Kumai), West and Central Java (Jakarta and Yogyakarta areas), Bali (Ubud, Lake Batur, Butuan Village, Candidasa, Sanur, Serangan Village and Kuta), northwestern Flores (Labuan Bajo, Cecer Village), Komodo, Rinca and the Bidadari Islands. Of the total of 19 owl species in Indonesia, 11 inhabit the aforementioned...AuthorsBruce G. MarcotSourceKauzbrief. 33(37): 45-47.Year2025
- The so-called "ghost moth", also known as the puriri moth, occurs only in native forests of North Island of New Zealand. The species has a most unique life history. The eggs hatch in forest floor litter, transform to caterpillars that then select native understory hardwood trees to crawl up the trunks and burrow into the cambium, creating large cavities they seal up with a membrane. They inhabit the tree cavity for several years, transforming into pupal stages, and eventually emerging as a winged adult. The free-flying adults live for only a few days, to mate and for the females to...AuthorsBruce G. MarcotKeywordsSourceWings, Spring 2025. 48 (1): 11-15.Year2025
- Climate change is substantially impacting earth’s biodiversity, with a massive number of affected species that are difficult to study comprehensively. An “indicator species” approach that generalizes species-specific climate change impacts to broader groups (e.g., ecological groups) could theoretically help overcome this challenge and streamline climate-smart conservation planning. We assessed this approach’s viability using four specialist amphibians (Ascaphus montanus, Dicamptodon copei, Plethodon idahoensis, and Plethodon vandykei), for which we expected convergent forecasted trajectorie...AuthorsSky T. - Santa Ana winds are dry offshore downslope windstorms, commonly observed during autumn and winter across southwestern California in the United States. The accuracy of real-time Santa Ana wind forecasts is crucial for wildfire- related emergency management and decision-making. This research utilizes the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s diagnostic wind flow model WindNinja (WN) and evaluates 1) the accuracy of 10-m sustained wind speed from an operational coarse resolution mesoscale forecast model and 2) the relative accuracy of high spatial resolution WN downscaled simulations...AuthorsDaisuke Seto, Charles Jones, David Siuta, Natalie S.
