Displaying 19,291 - 19,300 of 65,202 Publications- Multiple global changes are impacting Russia today. Economic transformations in Russia have prompted the establishment of new business relations, which are based on innovations in the economic, institutional and ecological spheres, including within the Forest industry. This paper focuses on the Forest sector in Irkutsk province and beyond, examining the basic problems related to the institutional innovations in the Forest industry of the province, and the major factors and conditions influencing the dynamics of institutional innovations. A brief historical background and analysis of...AuthorsDennis V. Dayneko, Eric J. GustafsonKeywordsSourceMiscellanea Geographica. 18(4): 17-23.Year2014
- This study uses a non-market valuation method to investigate the recreation values of the San Jacinto Wilderness in southern California. The analysis utilizes survey data from a stated-choice experiment involving backcountry visitors who responded to questions about hypothetical wildfire burn scenarios. Benefits of landscape preservation are derived using a Kuhn-Tucker (KT) demand system. Model results suggest that recreationists are more attracted to sites with recent wildfires that can be viewed up-close. For example, recreational welfare estimates increased for sites that were partially...AuthorsJosé J. SánchezSourceDoctoral dissertation, University of California, Riverside.Year2014
- Eugenia fragrans var.? fajardensis was described in 1895 and raised to species status in 1923 as E. fajardensis. In 1925, it was relegated to the synonymy of Anamomis fragrans (Myrcianthes fragrans). Since 2001, we have re-discovered wild plants and herbarium specimens, including a previously unidentified isotype of E. fajardensis, supporting the validity of this species. Here we designate a lectotype and an epitype for E. fajardensis. In addition, we provide: 1) an extended description for the species including the previously unknown flowers and fruits, an illustration, and photographs of...AuthorsJorge C. Trejo-Torres, Marcos A. - Climate-induced disturbances such as hurricanes affect the structure and functioning of many ecosystems, especially those in the Caribbean Basin, where effects are well documented with regard to biodiversity and biogeochemical dynamics. Because climate change will likely alter the frequency or intensity of such storms, it is increasingly important to understand the mechanistic bases for ecosystem responses. However, this is particularly difficult to do in the absence of manipulative experiments that decouple confounded factors such as canopy opening and debris deposition. To address this...AuthorsMichael R. Willig, Christopher P. Bloch, Steven J. PresleyKeywordsSourceForest Ecology and Management. 332 (2014) 103–117.Year2014
- We experimentally manipulated key components of severe hurricane disturbance, canopy openness and detritus deposition, to determine the independent and interactive effects of these components on tree recruitment, forest structure, and diversity in a wet tropical forest in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Canopy openness was increased by trimming branches, and we manipulated debris by adding or subtracting the trimmed materials to the trimming treatments, in a 2 2 factorial design replicated in three blocks.
He left a legacy of research that formed the basis for the fire behavior and danger systems still used in the United States. In addition to fire behavior topics, he applied his engineering skills to many other forestry-related issues.AuthorsDavid R. Weise, Ted R. FonsSourceForest History Today. Spring/Fall: 57-59Year2014
- The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has concluded, with 90% certainty, that human or "anthropogenic" activities (emissions of greenhouse gases, aerosols and pollution, landuse/land-cover change) have altered global temperature patterns over the past 100-150 years (IPCC 2007a). Such temperature changes have a set of cascading, and sometimes amplifying, effects on the entire global climate system, including the water cycle, cryosphere, hurricane intensity, and sea level. This chapter develops a set of scenarios for exploring potential climate and resource effects futures in...AuthorsDavid N. Wear, Thomas L. Mote, J. Marshall Shepherd, K. C. Benita, Christopher W. - The core of the literature on inter-sectoral labor migration is based on net present value models of investment in which individuals are assumed to migrate to take advantage of positive wage differentials. In this article, we argue that a real options approach, taken together with the adjustment costs associated with sectoral relocation, may provide a basis for explaining the migration of farm labor out of the agricultural sector. Given the irreversibility of migration decisions and uncertainty in the economy, potential migrants might choose to postpone migration, even in the face of...AuthorsGulcan Onel, Barry K. - Timber production and prices are determined by the global demand for forest products, and the capability of producers from many countries to grow and harvest trees, transform them into products and export. The Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) simulates how this global demand and supply of multiple products among many countries determines prices and attendant consumption, production and trade. This paper documents the methods, data and computer software of the GFPM model, followed by examples of applications to forecasting, and for policy analysis of the consequences of offset payments...AuthorsJoseph BuongiornoSourceForestry 88, 291–303Year2014
