- Food waste is a globally significant issue; up to 50 percent of fruit is lost from the time it is harvested until it is consumed. A new innovation from the Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory, Washington State University, and the University of Florida could address this issue while providing a new outlet and use for wood pulp. Barrier coatings for fruit made from naturally-derived, biodegradable compounds could be a safe and effective way to preserve fruit. These coatings are applied to the exterior of fruit peels with the intention of keeping the fruit fresher for longer. In their...AuthorsJunyong Zhu, Nicole M. Stark, Peter Kitin, Nayomi Z. - Forest managers are increasingly looking to restore ponderosa pine forests to more ecologically diverse conditions - forests with clusters of trees, openings, and multiple age classes instead of the evenly spaced, uniform stands produced by traditional forest management.AuthorsSylvia Kantor, Michael A. - Hidden like fish eggs in the streambed, the answer was buried in the mathematical models of Morgan Spark’s graduate work. Biologists and land managers know early fish life is sensitive, and nature is difficult to predict. In the streambed, eggs and young fish can be at risk from unintentional habitat disruptions from activities such as grazing, prescribed fire, and road work. The question was how to know when wild fish are hatching and emerging to avoid those sensitive windows. A new tool, hatchR, is here to lend biologists a helping hand - or fin.AuthorsAnnabelle Moore, Morgan Sparks, Bryan M. MaitlandKeywordsSourceScience You Can Use Tool, May 2026.
