In Missouri, shortleaf pine often occurs with oaks in mixedwood ecosystems, though its prevalence is diminished from historic levels. With interest in restoring shortleaf pine, research is needed on specific strategies for using prescribed fire to promote shortleaf pine in mixed pine-oak ecosystems. We studied the survival and resprouting of shortleaf pine and oaks of different sizes following a prescribe...AuthorsHope Fillingim, Benjamin O. Knapp, John M. Kabrick, Michael C. Stambaugh, Grant P. - Headwater streams play critical roles in hydrologic and biogeochemical processes and functions, yet their spatial distribution and land cover context remain poorly understood at continental scales, and no dedicated geospatial dataset exists. Building from a high-resolution conterminous United States (CONUS) hydrography network dataset, we quantified the spatial extent, density, and upstream catchment characteristics of headwater stream segments across the CONUS. We identified approximately 8.4 million kilometers of headwater streams, finding that 77% of the total stream network consists of...AuthorsCharles R. Lane, Ellen D’Amico, Jay R. - Objective: Although increasing evidence highlights the health benefits of living near green environments, little research has focused on physical interventions that increase the provision of greenspace. City, park, school, and forest managers are in need of program and practice guidance with health endpoints in mind.Material and methods: We conducted a systematic review of longitudinal evaluations of place-based greening interventions and their effects on health outcomes or behaviors. Included studies evaluated the effects of changes in outdoor spaces intended to increase the quantity,...AuthorsDustin Fry, Jalayna Antoine, Kylan Simpson, Ava-Clare Steed, Charles C. - This resource update contains the findings of a survey conducted on a sample of all primary wood-using mills in the state. It complements the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) annual inventory of volume and removals. The survey was conducted to determine the amount and source of wood receipts and annual timber product imports/exports. Only primary wood-using mills were surveyed. Primary mills are those that process roundwood in log or bolt form or as chipped roundwood. Examples of industrial roundwood products are saw logs, pulpwood, veneer logs, poles, and logs used for composite board...AuthorsUSDA Forest ServiceSourceResource Update FS-786.
