Average annual net change in C (AAC) and the cumulative sum of net changes in C were calculated using 65 years of data from permanent plots representing contrasting approaches to managing mixed-species stands dominated by shade-tolerant coniferous species on the Penobscot Experimental Forest in Maine, USA. Simulations of tree growth and mortality were used to...AuthorsJoshua J. Puhlick, Aaron R. Weiskittel, Laura S. Kenefic, Christopher W. W. Woodall, Ivan J. - The red pine forests of the western Great Lakes region aren't what they used to be. For a century, scientists and foresters have viewed these forests as structurally simple, single-cohort stands of red pine (Pinus resinosa) originating after stand-replacement fires. Forest managers emulated this perceived model in their management and have long grown even-aged red pine plantations. But after a century of this approach, along with fire suppression and a changing climate, these forests are showing signs of stress. The climate is warming, and forests are suffering from more frequent short-term...AuthorsNorthern Research Station. USDA Forest ServiceSourceRooted in Research. Issue 2, October 2020Year2020
- Although there is widespread support for diversity in natural resources, diversity is valued for different reasons. It is important to understand and critically examine these reasons, to ensure diversity efforts express clear thinking and appropriate motivations. We compiled recent (2000–2019) diversity literature in fisheries, forestry, range, and wildlife, and used a qualitative coding procedure to identify reasons articulated in support of diversity. We developed a subset of these reasons into formal arguments to assess their underlying beliefs and assumptions. Our analysis reveals a...AuthorsChelsea Batavia, Brooke Penaluna, Thea Rose Lemberger, Michael Paul. NelsonSourceBioScience. 70(8): 708-718.Year2020
- As a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the United States has been reporting an economy-wide Inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals since the mid-1990s (US EPA 2020). Forest land, harvested wood products (HWPs), and urban trees within the land sector collectively represent the largest net carbon (C) sink in the United States, offsetting more than 11 percent of total GHG emissions annually (US EPA 2020). Estimates of GHG emissions and removals are compiled by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service researchers and...AuthorsGrant M. Domke, Brian F. Walters, David J. - Ghana is a nation rich in natural resources and tropical diversity, with forests covering approximately one-fifth of the country’s total land area. To ensure that future generations of Ghanaians can enjoy the benefits of such a rich forest resource, Ghana has been enacting and enforcing laws intended to ensure that wood and wood-derived products are legally sourced. Compliance with and enforcement of these laws depend in part on the availability of technical or forensic expertise to validate claims of legality through the correct identification of timber during its extraction, processing,...AuthorsRafael Arévalo, Emmanuel Ebanyenle, Alberta Asi Ebeheakey, Kofi Abban Bonsu, Ophilious Lambog, Richard Soares, Alex C.
