Here, we use a horizon scanning approach to identify five large-scale trends that are likely to have substantial medium- and long-term effects on forests and forest livelihoods: forest megadisturbances; changing rural demographics; the rise of the middle-class in low- and middle-income countries; increased availability, access and use of digital technologies; and large-scale infrastructure development. These trends represent human and environmental processes that are exceptionally...AuthorsJohan A. Oldekop, Laura Vang Rasmussen, Arun Agrawal, Anthony J. Bebbington, Patrick Meyfroidt, David N. - Improving productivity and lipid concentration in microalgae is important for the economic success of both biofuel and microalgae coproducts production. Nannochloropsis spp. are marine microalgae currently being grown at large-scale for the production of biofuel and lipid coproducts. Here we demonstrate improvements of growth and omega-3 production in Nannochloropsis gaditana CCMP526 and Nannochloropsis oceanica CCAP849/10 with plant substrate addition, a potentially economical option for increasing microalgal productivity. We examine growth in the presence of corn stover, switchgrass,...AuthorsJenna Y. Schambach, Anna M. Finck, Peter Kitin, Christopher G. Hunt, Erik R. Hanschen, Brian Vogler, Shawn R. - In July, the resiliency of the U.S. housing market was a bright spot for the aggregate U.S. economy. Most month-over-month sectors were positive, and the majority of year-over-year categories were positive as well. Year-over-year, total multifamily permits, single-family housing under construction, single-family completions, and single-family construction spending indicated declines.AuthorsDelton AldermanKeywordsSourceRes. - There is little information concerning how people in the Global South perceive the benefits and costs associated with urban green areas. There is even less information on how governance influences the way people value these highly complex socio-ecological systems. We used semi-structured surveys, statistical analyses, and econometrics to explore the perceptions of users regarding governance and the benefits and costs, or Ecosystem Services (ES) and Ecosystem Disservices (ED), provided by Neotropical green areas and their willingness to invest, or not, for their conservation. The study area...AuthorsAlexandra Pineda-Guerrero, Francisco J. Escobedo, Fernando CarriazoSourceLand. 10(1): 14Year2020
- Anthropogenic change has been associated with population growth, land use change, and changing economies. However, internal migration patterns and armed conflicts are also key drivers of anthropogenic and demographic processes. To better understand the processes associated with this change, we explore the spatial relationship between forced migration due to armed conflict and changing socioeconomic factors in Colombia, a country which has a recent history of 7 million internal migrants. In addition, we use remote sensing, Google Earth Engine, as well as spatial statistical analyses of...AuthorsGuibor Camargo, Andrés Miguel Sampayo, Andrés Peña Galindo, Francisco J. - During adaptive metabolic evolution a native glycerol dehydrogenase (GDH) acquired a D-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. Two active-site amino acid changes were detected in the altered protein. Biochemical studies along with comparative structure analysis using an X-ray crystallographic structure model of the protein with the two different amino acids allowed prediction of pyruvate binding into the active site. We propose that the F245S alteration increased the capacity of the glycerol binding site and facilitated hydrogen bonding between the S245 γ-O and the C1 carboxylate of pyruvate....AuthorsDiane Chauliac, Qingzhao Wang, Franz St. John, Grace Jones, Jason C. - This study was focused on measuring the properties of twenty-three commercially available coatings formulated for exterior wood applications. The coatings were characterized by measuring their surface tension, solid content, viscosity, pH, and glass transition temperatures (Tg). Additionally, the wetting properties of coating droplets on wood substrates were measured. The contact angle of solvent-based and water-based coatings were characterized on untreated southern yellow pine wood samples using high-resolution image analysis and the Young–Laplace solution. An innovative image processing...AuthorsMichael J. Gibbons, Saeid Nikafshar, Tina Saravi, Katie M. Ohno, Sanjeev Chandra, Mojgan NejadSourceCoatings. 10(11): 1013. 19 p.Year2020
- Ionic liquids (ILs) can be used to sustainably convert lignocellulosic feedstocks into renewable bio-based materials and chemicals. To improve the prospects of commercialization, it is essential to investigate the fate of lignocellulosic biomass during IL-based processing and develop tools for designing and optimizing this “green” technology. In situ characterization during pretreatment and dissolution processes have shown that ILs reduced the inherent recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass via swelling of cellulose bundles and formation of fissures in the secondary cell wall layers. It...AuthorsKalavathy Rajan, Thomas Elder, Nourredine Abdoulmoumine, Danielle Julie Carrier, Nicole LabbéKeywordsSourceGreen ChemistryYear2020
- Mentoring has had a recent resurgence as the key to achieving both individual and organizational goals, especially as workforce diversification efforts have led to the hiring of new talent. Few studies have evaluated mentoring within an organization or examined changes in mentoring practices over time. We describe the role and status of mentoring for current fish biologists in the USDA Forest Service, including correlations between participation in mentoring and gender, race/ethnicity, career level, time in career, and job satisfaction based on a survey of agency employees (n = 136)....AuthorsBrooke Penaluna, Dan Shively, Brett B. - Arabinofuranose substitutions on xylan are known to interfere with enzymatic hydrolysis of this primary hemicellulose. In this work, two novel α-L-arabinofuranosidases (ABFs), TtABF51A from Thielavia terrestris and EpABF62C from Eupenicillium parvum, were characterized and functionally analyzed. From sequences analyses, TtABF51A and EpABF62C belong to glycoside hydrolase (GH) families 51 and 62, respectively. Recombinant TtABF51A showed high activity on 4-nitrophenyl-α-Larabinofuranoside (83.39 U/mg), low-viscosity wheat arabinoxylan (WAX, 39.66 U/mg), high-viscosity rye arabinoxylan (RAX,...AuthorsLiangkun Long, Lu Sun, Qunying Lin, Shaojun Ding, Franz St. JohnSourceApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology. 104(20): 8719-8733.Year2020
