It complements the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) annual inventory of volume and removals. The survey was conducted to determine the amount and source of wood receipts and annual timber product imports/exports. Only primary wood-using mills were surveyed. Primary mills are those that process roundwood in log or bolt form or as chipped roundwood. Examples of industrial roundwood products are saw logs, pulpwood, veneer logs, poles, and logs used for composite board...AuthorsUSDA Forest Service.SourceResour. Update FS-608. - Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) on paper have been demonstrated to be an effective barrier against oxy- gen and grease and have been shown to improve the barrier performance of dispersion-based barrier coatings. The potential to produce paper grades that have good oxygen, grease, and moisture barrier properties is clear, but a better understanding of the synergies between CNF, other coating layers, and water-based barrier coatings (WBBC) is needed to optimize these systems. Different coat weights of a commercial WBBC were applied to papers that have a range of different qualities and thicknesse...AuthorsKritee Pokharel, Douglas Bousfield, Jinwu WangSourceTAPPI JournalYear2025

- Climate change is forcing us to find innovative solutions to help managed forests cope with rapidly shifting environmental conditions. One of these tools is assisted forest migration, the deliberate movement of individuals or genetic material from native sources (i.e. provenance) to locations within or beyond their current ranges. This study aims to assess the climate analogue concept as seed sourcing method in an assisted migration field trial. We evaluated the five-year survival and growth of nine species in mixedwood plantings established in 2018 in Quebec, Canada. The factorial...AuthorsPatricia Raymond, Emilie Champagne, Daniel Dumais, Christel C. Kern, Catherine Perie, Alison D. Munson, Jean-Pierre Tremblay, Alejandro A. - Access to highly detailed models of heterogeneous forests, spanning from the near surface to above the tree canopy at varying scales, is increasingly in demand. This enables advanced computational tools for analysis, planning, and ecosystem management. LiDAR sensors, available through terrestrial (TLS) and aerial (ALS) scanning platforms, have become established as primary technologies for forest monitoring due to their capability to rapidly collect precise 3D structural information directly. Selection of these platforms typically depends on the scales (tree-level, plot, regional) required...AuthorsJuan Castorena, L.Turin Dickman, Adam Killebrew, James Gattiker, Rod Linn, E. - Fungi grow dense webs of mycelia that naturally form a 3D matrix, binding together any particles they encounter during growth. This property has been successfully exploited to create 100% bio-based lignocellulosic composites bound with mycelia. In this chapter, we review recent research on production procedures and performance of these composites. We identify various roles of mycelia in the composite performance and mechanisms by which mycelia contribute to composite properties. In addition, we point out critical knowledge gaps and identify commercial challenges facing this technology.AuthorsWenjing Sun, Christopher G.
