Active forest management, the direct human intervention in forests to achieve desired outcomes, is essential for sustaining healthy and productive forests. From regenerating valuable hardwood species such as oak to improving stand quality and informing harvesting decisions, the Forest Service’s Northern Research Station supports the long-term viability of working forests by producing evidence-based science. The Northern Research Station conducts applied research to provide National Forest System land managers knowledge and tools to make informed decisions.
