The Fireshed Registry: Smarter wildfire planning

USDA Forest Service scientists created the Fireshed Registry in response to frequent and wide-ranging questions about forest and fuels management in relation to risk and exposure. The Fireshed Registry 2.0 was released in 2025 as a collaborative project between Forest Service Research and Development, Fire and Aviation Management, and the Washington Office.

• The Fireshed Registry leverages a nationally consistent, all-lands, spatial framework to organize location-specific management opportunities to reduce wildfire risk.
• The registry provides public access to data describing important forest and fuel management context, fire and management history, and current wildfire exposure to communities from the landscape perspective.
• Combining social and biophysical conditions (such as ownership and vegetation type) at scales meaningful to wildfire and forest management.
• Connects risk assessment and planning in a single framework.
• The registry provides a foundation for communication and coordination with external agencies and partners for cross-boundary collaboration.
• The registry documents the origin and purpose of the firesheds and connects to how firesheds are being used.
