Fire Modeling Services Framework (FMSF)

The Fire Modeling Services Framework (FMSF) is a cloud-based service that provides an Application Programming Interface (API) which empowers both the users of expert systems as well as independent researchers and analysts to run wildland fire models on demand. It brings improved performance, consistent data, and faster analysis results for fire and fuels management while eliminating a user’s need to maintain their own expensive computing infrastructure for these purposes. 

The FMSF was the pioneer in the move toward Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for fire management applications. Today, the FMSF, along with other services, is integral to wildland fire and fuels decision support.

The FMSF is an interagency project between the USDA Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior.

What do you need to get started?
Interested users can request an account through the Wildland Fire Application Portal – FAMAuth. Understanding of how to run command line version of the fire behavior and fire effects models is also required.
Outputs
Wildland fire behavior and effects model outputs.
Strengths
FMSF is cloud-based so users are not computer limited in modeling. In addition, the FMSF is used by IFTDSS and WFDSS so all their users benefit from the FMSF having the most current code and technology without even knowing it.
Limitations
Individual users need to have expert knowledge of model inputs and outputs.
