- Two important wood properties are the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and the modulus of rupture (MOR). In the past, the statistical distribution of the MOE has often been modeled as Gaussian, and that of the MOR as lognormal or as a two- or three-parameter Weibull distribution. It is well known that MOE and MOR are positively correlated. To model the simultaneous behavior of MOE and MOR for the purposes of wood system reliability calculations, we introduce a bivariate Gaussian–Weibull distribution and the associated univariate pseudo-truncated Weibull (PTW). We note that theoretical arguments...AuthorsSteve P. Verrill, James W. Evans, David E. - Cellulose nanocrytals (CNCs) are predominantly produced using the traditional strong acid hydrolysis process. In most reported studies, the typical CNC yield is low (approximately 30%) despite process optimization. This study investigated the hydrolysis of a bleached kraft eucalyptus pulp using sulfuric acid between 50 and 64 wt % at temperatures of 35−80 °C over time periods of up to 240 min for the production of CNCs. The experimental design captured the feature of the coexistence of a variety of reaction products, such as CNC, cellulosic solid residue (CSR), glucose, and xylose, in the...AuthorsQianqian Wang, Xuebing Zhao, Junyong ZhuKeywordsSourceInd. - This study was designed to evaluate the performance of the extended wall structural panel connection in resisting combined uplift and shear forces at the roof-to-wall interface with a focus on a truss heel height of 24 in. to address the expected increases in the depth of attic insulation used in Climate Zones 5 and higher. Five full-size roof-wall assemblies were constructed with extended oriented strandboard (OSB) wall sheathing and each was tested under a different loading combination. Our test results indicate that using extended wood structural panel wall sheathing as the primary...AuthorsVladimir Kochkin, Andrew DeRenzis, Xiping WangKeywordsSourceUSDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, General Technical Report, FPL-GTR-233, 2014; 15 p.Year2014

- Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) has been extensively used in Europe and is now gaining momentum in North America; both Canada and more recently the U.S. Construction projects have shown that CLT can effectively be used as an alternative construction material in mid-rise structures and has significant potential in commercial and industrial buildings. In the United States, the CLT system is not currently recognized in seismic design codes and therefore a seismic design can only be performed through alternative methods specified in the codes. The FEMA P695 report published in 2009 presents a...AuthorsM. Omar Amini, John W. van de Lindt, Shiling Pei, Douglas R. - The effects of plasma exposure and vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation on the mechanical properties of low-k porous organosilicate glass (SiCOH) dielectric films were investigated. Nanoindentation measurements were made on SiCOH films before and after exposure to an electron-cyclotron-resonance plasma or a monochromatic synchrotron VUV beam, to determine the changes of film hardness, elastic modulus, and crack threshold due to these exposures. This permits the effects of ion bombardment and photon bombardment to be analyzed separately. The role of energetic ions was examined with a...AuthorsX. Guo, Joseph Jakes, S. Banna, Y. Nishi, J.L. - Water uptake in porous low-k dielectrics has become a significant challenge for both back-end-of-the-line integration and circuit reliability. This work examines the effects of water uptake on the fracture behavior of nanoporous low-k organosilicate glass. By using annealing dehydration and humidity conditioning, the roles of different water types and their concentrations are analyzed in detail. For as-deposited SiCOH films, annealing dehydration can enhance the resistance to crack occurrence, and these enhancements can be offset by higher humidity conditioning. It was found that the...AuthorsXiangyu Guo, Joseph Jakes, Samer Banna, Yoshio Nishi, J. Leon ShohetKeywordsSourceJournal of Vacuum Science & Technology A 32, 2014; pp. 031512 1-8.Year2014

- As urban densification occurs in U.S. regions of high seismicity, there is a natural demand for seismically resilient tall buildings that are reliable, economically viable, and can be rapidly constructed. In urban regions on the west coast of the U.S., specifically the Pacific Northwest, there is significant interest in utilizing CLT in 8-20 story residential and commercial buildings due to its appeal as a potential locally sourced, sustainable and economically competitive building material. In this study, results from a multi-disciplinary discussion on the feasibility and challenges in...AuthorsShiling Pei, Jeffrey Berman, Daniel Dolan, John van de Lindt, James Ricles, Richard Sause, Hans-Erik Blomgren, Marjan Popovski, Douglas R. - The design of multiple bolted connections in accordance with Appendix E of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) has incorporated provisions for evaluating localized member failure modes of row and group tear-out when the connections are closely spaced. Originally based on structural glued laminated timber (glulam) members made with all L1 Douglas fir-Larch laminating lumber, the NDS provisions were confirmed by additional analysis, which indicates the applicability of the provisions to glulam with reduced design shear values. Due to the similarity to glulam in the...AuthorsBorjen Yeh, Douglas R.
