- Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a well-studied photocatalyst that is known to break down organic molecules upon ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) act as an attractive matrix material for the suspension of photocatalytic particles due to their desirable mechanical and optical properties. In this work, TiO2–CNF composite films were fabricated and evaluated for photocatalytic activity under UV light and their potential to remove organic compounds from water. Subsequently, gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoclusters were formed on the film surfaces using simple reduction technique...AuthorsAlexandra Snyder, Zhenyu Bo, Robert J. - The elastic modulus of cellulose Iß in the axial and transverse directions was obtained from atomistic simulations using both the standard uniform deformation approach and a complementary approach based on nanoscale indentation. This allowed comparisons between the methods and closer connectivity to experimental measurement techniques. A reactive force field was used that explicitly describes hydrogen bond, coulombic and van der Waals interactions, allowing each contribution to the inter-and intramolecular forces to be analyzed as a function of crystallographic direction. The uniform...AuthorsXiawa Wu, Robert J. Moon, Ashlie MartiniKeywordsSourceCellulose, Volume 20, 2013; pp. 43-55.Year2013
- This paper examines the durability of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) nails in treated wood. The FRP nails were exposed to four conditions: (1) accelerated weathering, consisting of exposure to ultraviolet light and condensation; (2) 100% relative humidity (RH); (3) being driven into untreated wood and exposed to 100% RH; and (4) being driven into wood treated with alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) and exposed to 100% RH. Changes in the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties were examined with weight loss, dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA), and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR),...AuthorsSamuel L. - Solar energy is potentially the largest source of renewable energy at our disposal, but significant advances are required to make photovoltaic technologies economically viable and, from a life-cycle perspective, environmentally friendly, and consequently scalable. Cellulose nanomaterials are emerging high-value nanoparticles extracted from plants that are abundant, renewable, and sustainable. Here, we report on the first demonstration of efficient polymer solar cells fabricated on optically transparent cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) substrates. The solar cells fabricated on the CNC substrates...AuthorsYinhua Zhou, Canek Fuentes-Hernandez, Talha M. Khan, Jen-Chieh Liu, James Hsu, Jae Won Shim, Amir Dindar, Jeffrey P. Youngblood, Robert J. - This study uses a one-dimensional hygrothermal model to investigate the moisture performance of 10 residential wood-frame wall assemblies in a representative mixed-humid climate location of Baltimore, Maryland (climate zone 4A). All the assemblies include oriented strandboard (OSB) sheathing and vinyl siding. The walls differ in stud cavity thickness, level of cavity insulation, presence and type of exterior insulation, and class of interior vapor retarder. The performance of the wall assemblies is compared in four respects. First, seasonal trends in moisture, humidity, and temperature...AuthorsSamuel V. - We studied the mechanism of the significant enhancement in the enzymatic saccharification of lignocelluloses at an elevated pH of 5.5–6.0. Four lignin residues with different sulfonic acid contents were isolated from enzymatic hydrolysis of lodgepole pine pretreated by either dilute acid (DA) or sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocelluloses (SPORL). The adsorption isotherms of a commercial Trichoderma reesi cellulose cocktail (CTec2) produced by these lignin residues at 50 8C were measured in the pH range of 4.5–6.0. The zeta potentials of these lignin samples were also...AuthorsHongming Lou, Junyong Zhu, Tian Qing Lan, Huranran Lai, Xueqing QiuKeywordsSourceChemSusChem Volume 6, 2013; pp. 919- 927.Year2013
- The construction of low-rise nonresidential buildings is an important market for lumber, engineered wood products, and structural and nonstructural wood panels in the United States. This report examines low-rise nonresidential buildings of six or fewer stories. Those with more than six stories are normally severely restricted by building codes from being wood framed.AuthorsDavid B. McKeeverKeywordsSourceAPA-The Engineered Wood Association. - Improved estimates of the long-term durability of treated wood products are needed to guide choices about construction materials and allow estimates of design life. This report summarizes the long-term decay and insect resistance of treated wood post and lumber specimens placed in ground contact at a test site of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Product Laboratory in southern Mississippi. Posts treated with relatively low levels of creosote had an estimated durability of 54 years, and slightly less durability was observed in creosote-treated lumber. - It has been suggested that within- and between-mill variability of samples may have changed since the original North American In-Grade Program and a new sampling method may be required. The cooperative research “In-Grade Program” was conducted in the late 1970s to the late 1980s to establish allowable properties (modulus of elasticity (MOE), allowable bending stress (Fb), allowable compressive stress parallel to grain (Fc), and allowable tensile stress parallel to grain (Ft)) for dimension lumber based on full-size testing of graded lumber. The In-Grade Program was divided into three major...AuthorsJames W. Evans, David E. Kretschmann, Cherilyn Hatfield, David W. - A recently completed testing project conducted to evaluate optimized structural roof-to-wall attachment solutions demonstrated the effectiveness of wood structural panels in restraining high-heel trusses against rotation. This study was designed to further evaluate the performance of OSB wall sheathing panels extended over the high-heel truss in resisting combined uplift and shear forces. Five full-size roof–wall assemblies were constructed with extended OSB wall sheathing and each was tested under a different loading combination. Our test results indicate that using extended wood structura...AuthorsAndrew DeRenzis, Vladimir Kochkin, Xiping WangKeywordsSourceUSDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, General Technical Report, FPL-GTR-222, 2013; 15 p.Year2013
