- This chapter describes 'integrated biomass technologies', a systematic approach for maximizing value, performance, resource sustainability, and profitability in the agriculture and forest products industries. The fundamental principles of integrated biomass technologies provide a global roadmap to a bio-based economy based on the systematic use of many less-desirable lignocellulosic resources to produce liquid biofuels and chemical feedstocks, advanced biocomposites, and advanced structures. This switch in approach to meeting user needs will lead to a bio-based society using sustainable...AuthorsJ. E. Winandy, R. S. Williams, A. W. Rudie, R. J. - Arborists are often challenged to identify internal structural defects hidden from view within tree trunks. This article reports the results of a study using a trunk inspection protocol combining visual observation, single-path stress wave testing, acoustic tomography, and resistance microdrilling to detect internal defects. Two century-old red oak (Quercus rubra) trees located in Capitol Park, Madison, Wisconsin, U.S., were visually inspected and then evaluated using a single-path stress wave timer, an acoustic tomography, and a resistance measuring drill. The trees were subsequently...AuthorsXiping Wang, R. - Nanotechnology is the study and engineering of matter at the dimensions of 1-100 nm where physical, chemical, or biological properties are fundamentally different from those of the bulk material. The nanotechnology paradigm is to modify bulk properties and functionality by controlled manipulations at the nanoscale. Nanotechnology research has dramatically grown within the past 10 years because of recent developments in nanoscale characterization techniques, processes, and understanding of material behavior at the nanoscale. By expanding our understanding and control of matter at such...AuthorsRobert J. MoonKeywordsSourceMcGraw-Hill Yearbook of Science and Technology, 2008. - In this project, we investigated mechanical properties and fire performance of aspen flakeboards manufactured with the fire-retardant chemical disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT). Flakeboards were prepared using two levels of adhesive loading (5% and 7% methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI)) and three levels of fire-retardant treatments (6%, 9%, and 12%). DOT is a well known fire-retardant treatment for cellulosic materials. In this study, DOT powder was added to the blend of adhesive and flakes during manufacture of flakeboard. To evaluate fire performance, specimens were tested in a...AuthorsRobert H. White, John Forsman, John R. - Wood-plastic composite (WPC) lumber is promoted as a low-maintenance, high-durability product (Clemons, 2002). However, after a decade of exterior use in the construction industry, questions have arisen regarding durability. These questions are based on documented evidence of failures in the field of WPC decking products due to such impacts as polymer degradation (Klyosov, 2005), wood decay (Moms and Cooper, 1998), and susceptibility to mold which negatively impact the aesthetic qualities of the product. The industry has responded to problems associated with first-generation products by...AuthorsN. M. Stark, D. J. GardnerKeywordsSourceWood-polymer composites. - The development of biorefineries to produce fuel ethanol and commodity chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass is a potential alternative to current reliance on non-renewable resources. However, many technological barriers remain despite research progress in the past several decades. This article examines the major process barriers in biochemical conversion of biomass to cellulosic ethanol. We review the key pretreatment processes, including a process recently developed by the authors for biomass conversion, and the technical potentials for commercialization. The importance of feedstock...AuthorsJ.Y. Zhu, G.S. Wang, X.J. Pan, R. - A historical and technical overview of a paradigm for automating research procedures on the area of constitutive identification of composite materials is presented. Computationally controlled robotic, multiple degree-of-freedom mechatronic systems are used to accelerate the rate of performing data-collecting experiments along loading paths defined in multidimensional loading spaces. The collected data are utilized for the inexpensive data-driven determination of bulk material non-linear constitutive behavior models as a consequence of generalized loading through parameter identification/est...AuthorsJohn G. - Oxalate from partially decayed southern pine wood was analyzed by HPLC or colorimetric assay. Oxalate extraction efficiency, assessed by comparing analysis of whole wood cubes with ground wood, showed that both wood geometries could be extracted with comparable efficiency. To differentiate soluble oxalate from total oxalate, three extraction methods were assessed, using phosphate buffer, sulphuric acid or sodium hydroxide. Oxalate values from phosphate buffer extracts were two to three times higher than those from sulphuric acid extracts by both methods of analysis. Results for HPLC...AuthorsCarol A. - A recent change in wood preservatives has highlighted the need for a rapid, quantitative test to measure the corrosion rates of metals in contact with treated wood that could be used to evaluate new fasteners or new wood preservatives. A new method was developed where polarisation resistance tests were conducted on fasteners exposed to a water extract of wood treated with alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ). Good correlation was found between the corrosion rates using this new method and previous one year exposure data for carbon steel, hot-dip galvanized and electroplated galvanized fasteners...AuthorsSamuel L.
