- Starting with test methods and a specification developed by the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Environmentally Benign Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Postage Stamp Program, a laboratory-scale test method and a specification were developed and validated for pressure-sensitive adhesive labels, By comparing results from this new test method and pilot-scale tests, which have been previously validated with mill trials, we showed that the new test could be used to qualify label products as recycling-compatible.AuthorsCarl J. - In an earlier modeling study, we showed that when a hardwood kraft pulp is bleached in the D0(EO)D1ED2 sequence with a D0 stage kappa factor of 0.20, the brightness of the pulp emerging from the D2 stage can be accurately predicted from the brightness of the pulp entering that stage. The entering brightness, in turn is a well-defined function of the ratio of the D1 stage CIO2 charge to the (EO) stage kappa number. In the present study, we use the results of pulping and bleaching experiments on southern U.S. red oak chips to extend the model to account for the effect of changing the D0...AuthorsThomas J. - Measurements of wood density and anatomical properties of wood disks were conducted by SilviScan (CSIRO Australia) and a new imaging technique. The disks included red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.) obtained from a never-thinned experimental forest with five different plantation densities and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) and lodgepole pine (P. contorta Engelm.) (one normal growth and the other suppressed growth), both supplied by a sawmill. The results indicated that the effect of tree-growing conditions can be effectively characterised by radial annual...AuthorsJ. Y. Zhu, D. W. Vahey, C. T. Scott, G. C. - This study evaluates the potential use of currently unexploited burnt timber from prescribed burns and wildfires for oriented strandboard (OSB). The research was performed in two phases: in Phase I, the effect of thermal exposure of timber on OSB properties was evaluated. Jack pine (Pinus banksiana) trees variously damaged by a moderately intense prescribed burn in a northern Wisconsin forest were selected. Four fire-damage levels of wood were defined and processed into series of single-layer OSB. The flakes used in Phase I had all char removed. Mechanical and physical properties were...AuthorsLaura Moya, Jerrold Winandy, William T. Y. Tze, Shri RamaswamyKeywordsSourceForest products journal. Vol. 58, no. 6 (June 2008): Pages 45-52.Year2008
- As a part of the National Fire Plan, the USDA Forest Service is conducting research to reduce the severity of forest fires through effective utilization of low-or no-value logging residues and forest thinnings. This report explores the effect of processing on the physical properties of the fibrous material and flat fiberboard panels made from small-diameter lodgepole pine treetops processed with the bark. Delimbed treetops were chipped and fiberized with water using commercial equipment, digested with hot water and/or small amounts of chemical additives, refined in a disk refiner, and...AuthorsJohn F. - With greatly increased gasoline and diesel prices in the United States, worldwide crude oil prices at record levels, dependence on imports from insecure sources, and environmental concern over accumulation of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, residents and legislators recognize the increasing need for alternative supplies of transportation fuels. Production of ethanol from wood is not yet economically viable, but new legislation supports research to solve problems and provides subsidies that can make manufacturing profitable.AuthorsJohn I. - Fibers from treetop residues of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and recycled old corrugated containers were used to fabricate wet-formed fiberboard panels over a range of densities from 300 to 1100 kg m-3, a thickness range from 1.3 to 4.8 mm, and phenolic resin contents from 0% to 4.5%. The panels were then tested after conditioning in 50% and 90% relative humidity (RH) environments. Density, thickness, equilibrium moisture content, bending modulus of elasticity (MOE), and modulus of rupture (MOR) were measured for each panel. Panel apparent-density increased with thickness, but this may...AuthorsJohn F. - Milled southern pine wood was modified with sequential treatments of sodium periodate and sodium hypobromite for the purpose of improving copper ion (Cu2+) sorption capacity of the wood when tested in 24-h equilibrium batch tests. The modified wood provided additional carboxyl groups to those in the native wood and substantially increased Cu2+ uptake over that of unmodified wood. Sorption capacity (qe) measured with an unbuffered standard solution increased to a maximum of 7.8 mg Cu2+ ion per gram of wood (treated) from 3.1 mg Cu2+ ion/g wood (untreated). Samples tested were first sodium...AuthorsJames McSweeny, Roger M. Rowell, George Chen, Thomas L. - The aim of the present study was to combat wood decay based on the approach controlled-release biocides from polymers. The possibility of introducing polymer-bonded fungicides into the cell lumens was investigated. The synthesis of ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer containing pentachlorophenol (penta) and 8-hydroxy quinoline (8HQ) in N, N dimethyl formamide is described. It was demonstrated that the penta-bonded acrylate is a poly(ethylene co-dipentachlorophenyl diacrylate), which has a disubstituted pentachlorophenyl group linked through two acrylate ester bonds. The reaction of...AuthorsGeorge ChenKeywordsCopolymer, ethylene maleic anhydride, fungal decay resistance, fungicides, poly(ethylene co-8-hydroxy quinolinyl acrylate), poly(ethylene co-dipentachlorophenyl diacrylate), synthesis, wood, hydrolysis, plastic impregnated wood, wood deterioration, antifungal agents, wood biodegradation, wood-decaying fungi, maleic anhydride, polyethylene, composite materials, testing, wood plastic composites, fungicides, synthesis, ethylenes, ethylene maleic anhydride, treated wood, resistance to decay, biocides, wood plastic materials, decay fungi, impregnationSourceHolzforschung.
