Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands Champion Tree Project

Champion Trees are the tallest, widest, and often the oldest trees of their species – natural landmarks that reflect Puerto Rico’s incredible biodiversity, rich history and enduring spirit.

Since 1992 the International Institute of Tropical Forestry has led the Puerto Rico Champion Tree Program to work in partnership with communities, conservation groups, and passionate individuals to identify and document these exceptional trees. Using a standardized measurement system developed by American Forests in the 1940s, the program has certified 108 Champion Trees across the archipelago.

We want to keep the search for Champions going – and we need your help! Whether by visiting a Champion Tree, sharing its story with others, or nominating a tree in your community, everyone can contribute to the conservation and recognition of Puerto Rico’s most remarkable trees.

Together, we can help ensure that these living treasures continue to be celebrated and enjoyed by current and future generations.

• Promote utilization of public green spaces
• Make the program accessible to people with disabilities
• Promote education and citizen science
