Resource Inventory

FIA staff collect forest resource data in every state in the Northern Research Station region and in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. These data include information on the forest extent, canopy cover, growth, mortality, removals, and overall health. Forest ownership surveys are conducted to understand landowner plans, desires, values, and intentions. Wood processing studies gather information on the commercial production of timber products. Utilization studies provide data on how much wood is removed during harvest.
