Water

Although civilizations have built infrastructures to obtain and transport water, the ultimate source of the water is always the natural world. Surface water and ground water both depend on lands where precipitation falls into watersheds and reservoirs or is pumped from springs and wells. Clean water is considered the most vital of the ecosystem services provided by forests and wetlands. Forested watersheds in the United States provide drinking water to more than 180 million people.
