- Leaf, root and stem systems of loblolly pine seedlings are characterized by a seasonal periodicity in growth, during which they alternate in spurts of activity. Despite this periodicity, the allometric coefficient describing the ratio of the relative growth rates of leaf to root remains constant for at least the first two years of development. - Organic matter in soil controls a variety of soil properties. A study in Humboldt County, California, evaluated changes in percentages of organic matter in soil as a function of time after timber harvest and soil depth in fir and redwood forests. To assess organic matter content, samples were taken from cutblocks of various ages in soil to depths of 1.33 m. Results indicate that only depth correlated significantly with organic matter in the fir forest. - A classification system for use in describing vegetation has been developed and is being applied to southern California. It is based upon a hierarchical stratification of vegetation, using physiognomic and taxonomic criteria. The system categories are Formation, Subformation. Series, Association, and Phase. Formations, Subformations, and Series have been specified for current southern California plant communities. - On the basis of crown and bole characteristics, risk-rating systems to predict the probability that a tree will die within 5 years were developed for mature red fir and white fir in northern California. The systems apply to firs at least 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter-at-breast-height (d.b.h.), growing in mature stands, with the original overstory at least partially intact. - In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to lOO,547/ha) for a single species in a given year.
