- An especially designed series of fire prevention lessons were taught to preschool children in the Headstart Project in Riverside County, Calif. Their effectiveness was evaluated by observing classroom reaction and by testing the children at the end of the year. - A method for solving a class of problems in random sequential processes is presented. Sawing cedar pencil blocks is used to illustrate the method. Equations are developed for the function representing loss from improper sizing of blocks. A weighted over-all distribution for sawing and drying operations is developed and graphed. - Thinning ponderosa and Jeffrey pine pole stands (6 to 8 inches d.b.h.) on Meyer Site Classes IV and V land (site index 65 to 80) stimulates growth in diameter and height. This was concluded from data on 12 thinned plots scattered over northeastern California, in natural stands and in a plantation. Basal areas immediately after thinning ranged from 13 to 149 square feet per acre. Stands had many dissimilarities before thinning. - Abstract - This paper summarizes our current understanding of the effects of timber harvesting on erosion. Rates of erosion on mountain watersheds vary widely but the relative importance of different types of erosion and the consequences of disturbances remain fairly consistent. - Abstract - The effects of logging and associated road construction on four California trout and salmon streams were investigated from 1966 through 1969. This study included measurements of streambed sedimentation, water quality, fish food abundance, and stream nursery capacity. Logging was found to be compatible with anadromous fish production when adequate attention was given to stream protection and channel clearance. - A 34-year study of the condition of unburned logging slash in two mixed conifer sites in northern California showed that breakdown and decay occurs at a much slower rate than has been reported elsewhere. The long-term studies were made on the Lassen and Stanislaus National Forests. Correlative weather data for an 18-year period suggested that high summer temperatures and low summer and fall precipitation were vital in retarding slash decay. - Effects of four light intensities on germination, survival, and early growth of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) were studied on south-facing cutblocks in northwestern California. Tested were four shade intensities: 0, 25, 50, and 75 percent. On seeded spots, 50 percent shade resulted in greatest germination and survival, being significantly better than either no shade or 25 percent shade, but not better than 75 percent-shade. - A trial of rest-rotation grazing was started in 1954 on the Harvey Valley allotment of the Lassen National Forest, northern California. This paper evaluates progress observed to 1966. Ecologically the program is considered sound. And after only a decade, the allotment was in better condition than allotments grazed season-long. Cattle weight gains were acceptable, and as good as could be expected from the surrounding area.
