- Records of 5 and 6 years' cone crops in old-growth redwood (Sequoia sempervirens [D. Don Endl.] stands in northern California were studied for silvical facts. They show that (a) the principal trees in both cut and uncut stands bore fair to good cone crops for 5 consecutive years, (b) maximum seed dispersal of both total and sound seed occurred in winter, (c) overtopped trees under 30 inches d.b.h. produced almost no .cones, and (d) about 86 percent of sound seed germinated, with most seed germinating in 12 days. - New systems for analyzing resource management problems, such as Planning-Programing-Budgeting, will require automated procedures to collect and assemble resource inventory data. A computer - oriented system called Map Information Assembly and Display System developed for this purpose was tested on a National Forest in California. It provided information on eight forest resource systems at an average cost of 0.16 cents per acre. - Soil moisture was measured around an isolated mature sugar pine tree (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.) in the mixed conifer forest type of the north central Sierra Nevada, California, from November 1965 to October 1966. From a sequence of measurements, horizontal and vertical soil moisture profiles were developed. - Compares the expected capital value growth of five ponderosa pine stands (70 to 80 years old) on the Challenge Experimental Forest, Yuba County, Calif., with the cost of delaying harvest (defined as sum of stock-holding and land-holding costs). Suggests that replacement of all five stands would be financially desirable under constant stumpage prices. - Loss of precipitation due to interception by annual grass and grass litter was measured during three rainy seasons on the San Dimas Experimental Forest, in southern California. Interception loss from annual grass averaged 7.9 percent; that from mature chaparral cover, 12.8 percent.
