- Management for timber crops is feasible on about 12,000 acres of forest land in American Samoa. Another 10,000 acres of forest land are on such steep topography that management for protection of watershed values should be paramount . Excluding such critical watersheds the forests hold 50 million board feet or more of sawtimber in a great variety of tree species. Some species have good growth form and wood quality. - Four processes are identified as determining the initial interception of falling snow by forest during storms: delivery of snow particles from the airstream to the forest; true throughfall of particles to the forest floor; impaction and adhesion of particles to foliage and branches; and cohesion of particles into masses of snow. - A wide range in quantitative composition of the wood oleoresin monoterpenes was found among 64 ponderosa pines in the central Sierra Nevada by gas chromatographic analysis. An inverse relationship was found in the amount of β-pinene and Δ3-carene. Practically no difference in composition could be associated with (a) type of sample preparation and analysis, (b) position on the trunk of the tree where the oleoresin was obtained, (c) time within a season, between seasons, and between years, (d) time of flow of oleoresin from a wound, and (e) storage time of prepared samples.AuthorsRichard H. The prevalence and identity of 72 pathogens occurring on Pinus radiate D. Don are described against a brief background of the native host and its environment. Records of pathogens in California herbaria, pathology notes is Forest Service files, findings of recent surveys, and publications provide the basis for an index of these pathogens. - Abstract - The quantity of summer soil moisture lost from logged forest openings was related to the length of time since the creation of the opening, in the subalpine forest zone of the Sierra Nevada west side, near the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory, California, at an elevation of 6000 to 7000 feet. Soil moisture depletion was measured in forest openings which were created in 1959, 1955, 1950, and 1948, and in the forest surrounding these openings. - A fuel-break is a wide strip or block of land on which native brush fuels have been reduced or eliminated to facilitate fire control. Brush removal creates a plant vacuum which should be filled rapidly with plants that will protect the soil against erosion, produce lower fuel volume than native chaparral, and possibly provide grazing for wild or domesticated animals.
