- Presents a method of quantitatively representing the mosaic of stand types on a small landscape in the subalpine lodgepole pine forest type. The method utilizes macroplots placed systematically on a transect grid. Structure and composition of both current and past stands are inventoried. - Conifer establishment following regeneration timber harvests is predicted by version 2 of the Regeneration Establishment Model, a submodel of the Prognosis Model. The regeneration model covers 1 O species for forests in Montana, central Idaho, and northern Idaho. Most harvest and site preparation methods can be simulated so that alternative treatments can be evaluated. - A capital accounting approach is used to measure the net effects of land area change, forest type conversion, and direct investment on timber assets in the U.S. South from 1952 to 1992. The resulting measure of net forest investment indicates asset growth on the lands held by forest industry but net disinvestment on all other private lands. - Financial anaylses of intensive and low-cost reforestation options are conducted for two predominant timber types in the United States: loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands with hardwood competition in the South, and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) and red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) stands in the Pacific Northwest. Results show that the expected present values (EPVs) of low-cost options that result in mixtures of conifers and hardwoods are superior, in some situations, to the EPVs of the intensive options. - Long-term radial growth trends of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa var. scopuforum) were studied in second-growth stands in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains to determine if there has been any impact from oxidant air pollution. Although ozone concentrations are relatively high at some locations, visible pollutant injury was not found in any trees. Time series of basal area increments are generally homogeneous within stands. - Debate over the classification, protection, and management of forested wetlands has intensified in recent years.
