- A mathematical expression was developed to estimate Engelmann spruce seed dispersal into clearcut openings. The pattern of seed dispersal is a rapid decline from within the windward stand to the stand edge and beyond into the opening. The amount of seedfall dispersed to the windward stand edge is about 80% of the seedfall under the uncut, windward stand. About 40% of the seedfall under the uncut stand is dispersed as far as 100 feet into the opening, and 10% as far as 300 feet. - Cattle grazing in pastures bisected by a small perennial stream in central Colorado had only minor effects on water quality during two years of study. Suspended solids and nitrate nitrogen did not increase significantly, and ammonia nitrogen increased significantly only once under moderate rates of grazing. Indicator bacteria densities in the stream water were significantly higher when at least 150 cattle were grazing. - Trees from growing stock levels of 20, 60, and 100 in sapling and pole stands were sampled at three vertical positions -zero, 25, and 50 percent of total height above the 1-foot stump. Wood grown during the 10-year period after initial thinning was compared for growth and wood properties. Wide differences in radial growth, induced by thinning treatments, were not accompanied by significant differences in specific gravity, latewood percentage, tracheid length, nor microfibril angle.
