- A bird census method is presented that is designed for tall, structurally complex vegetation types, and rugged terrain. With this method the observer counts all birds seen or heard around a station, and estimates the horizontal distance from the station to each bird. Count periods at stations vary according to the avian community and structural complexity of the vegetation. - Presents a summary and analysis of data from a survey of visitors to eight wildernesses and related areas in the Montana and Idaho Rockies and to one wilderness in the California Sierra Nevadas. Basic data on use patterns, including types of groups, activities, travel behavior, visitor characteristics, motives for visits, satisfaction with conditions experienced, and preferences for management actions are described and compared among areas, between day-users and campers, horsemen and hikers, and summer and fall visitors. - An estimated 466 million ft 3 of forest residue material (nonmerchantable, 3 inches diameter and larger) is generated annually in the Northern Rocky Mountains (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming). Extensive studies of residues in the major forest types show a considerable portion is suited for various products. The lodgepole pine type has the greatest potential for increased residue utilization. In most other forest types, form and condition of residues limit potential use to fiber or fuel. - Larch-fir stands in northwest Montana were experimentally logged to determine the influence of increasingly intensive levels of utilization upon rates of yarding production, under three different silvicultural prescriptions. - An over-mature Douglas-fir/western larch stand on the Coram Experimental Forest in Montana averaged about 7,300 ft3/acre (511 rn3/ha) of wood over 3 inches (7.62 cm) in diameter, and an additional 57 tons/acre (128/ha) of fine material, before harvest. After logging, using three different cutting methods and four different levels of utilization, wood residues ranged from 600 ft 3/acre (43 m3/ha) under intensive utilization to over 3,500 ft3/acre (245 m3/ha) where only saw logs were removed.
