Future-proofing forest restoration decisions with genetic information (ERR26)
Full Project Title: Future proofing forests through a genetically informed reforestation/restoration decision network

Project Identification Number: ERR26
This project with study how genomic data and tools can predict tree responses to future climate conditions. The work will help identify species with high restoration potential. Research questions include:
- Which tree species will be the most desirable for forest restoration in the eastern U.S. in coming decades?
- Do we have sufficient understanding of where to deploy seed sources of those species in light of changing climate conditions?
- Is there sufficient seed orchard and nursery capacity to produce the needed number of seedlings?
The researchers are testing this landscape genomics approach with existing field trial studies for white oak, white spruce, black walnut, and butternut. Each of these species is culturally significant to multiple Indigenous nations.
The study results are expected to inform seed source selection for nursery, orchard, and forest managers to help future-proof reforestation decisions.
