Ecological and Physical Description
In the Black Mountain range, highest peaks east of the Mississippi River, visible from highways of Western NC. Lies in watershed of South Toe River. A wide range of elevation lends the area to contain several of the major forest types of the region. Of outstanding interest is the spruce – fir association which is extremely important from the standpoint of timber value and watershed protection. Most of the Fraser fir has been killed by the balsam wooly adelgid.

Very rough mountain land with steep slopes and sharp ridges. Barren and rock outcrops (113 acres), stony rough land, very steep to steep terrain, cliffs with and without lichens.
Permanent running and intermittent running freshwater as cold springs and streams.
