Displaying 13,741 - 13,750 of 65,176 Publications- Quantifying prey taken by Pacific Marten (Martes americana caurina) helps to understand local habitat requirements of the species. We collected 250 scat samples associated with at least 53 marten in a salvage-logged Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta)-Bitterbrush shrub (Purshia tridentata) forest in south-central Oregon. The frequency of occurrence of food items included 98.0% mammals, 36.0% arthropods, 23.2% birds, 9.2% plants, 2.0% hares and rabbits, and 0.8% reptiles. Among mammals, 72.4% were vole-sized and 47.2% squirrel-sized. Chipmunks (Neotamias spp., 27.6%) and ground squirrels...AuthorsRandall Wilk, Martin G. - Macroarthropods rarely are considered in forest management decisions, despite their ecological importance as decomposers, herbivores, pollinators, predators, and nutrient cyclers, and potential of some taxa as indicators of forest condition. We used a replicated design to experimentally determine if, and how, community composition, richness, and biomass of terrestrial macroarthropods differed between recent shelterwood harvests and unharvested controls in an intermediate quality upland hardwood forest. Richness of orders or families did not differ between treatments. Abundance and dry...AuthorsJohn Westby-Gibson, Katie H. Greenberg, Christopher E. Moorman, T.G. Forrest, Tara L. Keyser, Dean M. - Background : The possible effects of climate change on sex allocation of a species have recently emerged as a topic of interest, relative to population sustainability via natural regeneration. Also, the universality of pollen limitation for reproduction and how climate may in fl uence it in different taxonomic groups remain to be explored. Aims : The aim of this study was to examine how climate fl uctuation may affect sex allocation in Pinus palustris . Methods : We used a long-term observational data on P. palustris (1957 – 2014), including pollen, female conelets and cone production....AuthorsQinfeng Guo, Dale Brockway, Xiongwen ChenKeywordsSourcePlant Ecology & DiversityYear2017
- This science update contains the findings of a 2015 canvass of all primary wood-using plants in Louisiana, and presents changes in product output and residue use since 2013. It complements the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) annual inventory of volume and removals from the State’s timberland. The canvass was conducted to determine the amount and source of wood receipts and annual timber product drain, by county, in 2015 and to determine interstate and cross-regional movement of industrial roundwood. Only primary wood-using mills were canvassed. Primary mills are those that process...AuthorsDavid J. Wall, James Bentley, Jason Cooper, James Gray, Michael Blazier, Shawn M. - This report summarizes a state-of-the-art review conducted on the topic of field measurement of the quality of wood in trees. The foundation science of micro-resistance drilling and acoustic-based techniques for use with woody materials is presented, and use of these techniques for the detection of biodeterioration in wood is discussed. Quantification of the physical and mechanical properties of wood, in standing timber, is reviewed. Studies designed to examine the use of these techniques with trees are summarized, and a list of commercially available technologies that use these techniques...AuthorsMark Rudnicki, Xiping Wang, Robert J. - Thirteen bonded engineered wood products representing those commonly used in building construction were evaluated for volatile organic chemicals using methods developed for interior bonded wood products. Although formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were emitted from all samples, they were not the dominant volatiles, which greatly depended on wood species and bonding processes.AuthorsSteve Zylkowski, Charles R. - Natural resource managers need up-to-date information about how people interact with public lands and the meanings these places hold for use in planning and decision-making. This case study explains the use of public participatory Geographic Information System (GIS) to generate and analyze spatial patterns of the uses and values people hold for the Browns Canyon National Monument in Colorado. Participants drew on maps and answered questions at both live community meetings and online sessions to develop a series of maps showing detailed responses to different types of resource uses and...AuthorsJohn Harner, Lee K. - The diversity of aquatic ecosystems is being quickly reduced on many continents, warranting a closer examination of the consequences for ecological integrity and ecosystem services. Here we describe intermediate and final ecosystem services derived from aquatic biodiversity in forests. We include a summary of the factors framing the assembly of aquatic biodiversity in forests in natural systems and how they change with a variety of natural disturbances and human-derived stressors. We consider forested aquatic ecosystems as a multi-state portfolio, with diverse assemblages and life-history...AuthorsBrooke Penaluna, Deanna H. Olson, Rebecca Flitcroft, Matthew A. Weber, J.
