The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of preservative-treated refractory solid heartwood comprised of southern pine, Douglas-fir, or Engelmann spruce. Non-incised and incised solid lumber of these species were treated to three different retentions of either chromated copper arsenate (CCA) or ammoniacal copper arsenate (ACA) and placed in ground contact (AWPA E7) at a Mississippi field test site in 1975. Field stakes were rated...AuthorsMark E. Mankowski, Stan Lebow, Grant T. - Surfaces of novel foam core sandwich panels were adhered with intumescent fire‐retardant paper underneath the veneers (FRV) to improve their flammability properties. The panels were evaluated by means of cone calorimeter test (ASTM E 1354). Variables tested were different surface layer treatments, adhesives used for veneering, surface layer thicknesses, and processing conditions, having the objective of obtaining similar or better flammability as that of solid particle boards. Previous research showed that sandwich panels without FRV compared to panels with FRV generally had much higher...AuthorsMark A. - This science update contains the findings of a 2015 canvass of all primary wood-using plants in Florida, and presents changes in product output and residue use since 2013. It complements the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) annual inventory of volume and removals from the State’s timberland. The canvass was conducted to determine the amount and source of wood receipts and annual timber product drain, by county, in 2015 and to determine interstate and cross-regional movement of industrial roundwood. Only primary wood-using mills were canvassed. Primary mills are those that process...AuthorsDavid J. Wall, James Bentley, Jason Cooper, James GraySourcee-Science Update–135. - This study evaluated relationships between site or tree characteristics and below-ground materials in Douglas-fir forests of the Pacific Northwest. We core-sampled living roots, dead organic matter, and mineral fragments at three soil depths on a 300-sample grid at nine forested sites in western Washington and Oregon resulting in approximately 7200 samples. We explored relationships between materials across depths and at three scales—point, block and site—and examined the data to quantify the degree of spatial clustering. Mass of roots and organic matter declined with depth; there were no...AuthorsConnie Harrington, Scott M. Holub, Cici Bauer, Ashley SteelKeywordsSourceNorthwest Science. 91(4): 326-343.Year2017
- Local outbreak risk for the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae),is forecast with a trapping survey conducted every spring throughout the southeastern United States. Traps baitedwith pine odors and components of the D. frontalis aggregation pheromone are used to obtain abundance estimatesof both this species and its clerid predator Thanasimus dubius (F.) (Coleoptera: Cleridae); these data are enteredinto a predictive model that estimates outbreak risk. An attractant synergist for D. frontalis, endo-brevicomin, hasrecently been included in the...AuthorsWilliam Shepherd, Brian SullivanKeywordsSourceJournal of Insect ScienceYear2017
- Increasing environmental regulations have limited the use of certain broad spectrum synthetic pesticides as wood preservatives creating a need for more environmentally benign wood preservative systems. Biocidal compounds from natural products have been proposed as alternatives to commercial wood preservatives, but field data from long term performance testing is lacking. To investigate long term performance of wood extractives, stakes and blocks of southern pine (SP) and cottonwood (CW) were treated with heartwood extractives of four durable wood species commonly used in Pakistan. Treated...AuthorsBabar Hassan, Sohail Ahmed, Mark E. Mankowski, Grant T. KirkerKeywordsSourceIn: Proceedings, one hundred thirteenth annual meeting of the American wood protection association.
