The authors collected primary (survey) mill data from LVL production facilities per Consortium on Research for Renewable Industrial Materials (CORRIM) Research Guidelines. Comparative assertions were not a goal of the present study.AuthorsRichard Bergman, Sevda Alanya-RosenbaumKeywordsSourceCORRIM Final Report. Module H2. 90 p.Year2017
- This publication provides an overview of forest resources in South Dakota based on an inventory conducted by the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program at the Northern Research Station (NRS) in cooperation with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, Resource Conservation and Forestry Division. Estimates are based on field data collected using the FIA annualized sample design and are updated yearly. For the 2016 inventory, estimates for current variables such as area, volume, and biomass are based on 8,275 plot samples collected from 2011-2016. Change variables...AuthorsBrian F. - This resource update provides an overview of forest resources in Iowa based on inventories conducted by the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program at the Northern Research Station in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Estimates are based on field data collected using the FIA annualized sample design and are updated yearly. The cycle length for annual inventory in Iowa 1999-2013, was 5 years. In 2014, NRS-FIA changed to a 7-year inventory cycle, wherein 1/7th (14.3 percent) of the plots will be measured annually until 2020. This report...AuthorsMark D. Nelson, Tivon E. - Stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ18O) of tree-ring α-cellulose are important tools in paleoclimatology, ecology, plant physiology and genetics. The Multiple Sample Isolation System for Solids (MSISS) was a major advance in the tree-ring α-cellulose extraction methods, offering greater throughput and reduced labor input compared to traditional alternatives. However, the usability of the method for resinous conifer species may be limited by the need to remove extractives from some conifer species in a separate pretreatment step. Here we test the necessity of pretreatment for α-cellulose...AuthorsWen Lin, Asko Noormets, John S. - There has been an increased interest in tree breeding for resistance to exotic pests and pathogens, however relatively little research has focused on the reintroduction of these tree species. Understanding the durability of resistance in field settings and the field performance of improved trees is critical for successful species reintroduction. To evaluate methods for reintroducing American chestnut [Castanea dentata (Marsh.) Borkh] to managed forests on the Cumberland Plateau, we quantified four-year survival and growth and three-year competitive ability of chestnut seedlings planted on...AuthorsCornelia Wilson, Scott E. - Sassafras albidum (Sassafras) is an ecologically important tree species that is widely distributed throughout the eastern United States. Sassafras is presently threatened by Raffaelea lauricola, a fungus vectored by Xyleborus glabratus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae; Redbay Ambrosia Beetle), which causes a lethal vascular wilt known as laurel wilt disease (LWD). This study summarizes the status of Sassafras across the entire eastern United States and in areas with LWD in particular, so that LWD-induced changes in the Sassafras resource may be properly understood. Inventory data...AuthorsKaDonna RandolphSourceSoutheastern Naturalist.Year2017
- Current standardized methods are not well-suited for estimating in-service preservative leaching from treated wood products. This study compared several alternative leaching methods to a commonly used standard method, and to leaching under natural exposure conditions. Small blocks or lumber specimens were pressure treated with a wood preservative containing borax and copper hydroxide. The specimens were leached using scenarios involving short periods of immersion, simulated rainfall, or to a longer period of outdoor exposure to natural precipitation. When compared with lumber specimens...AuthorsStan Lebow, Patricia K. Lebow, Kolby HirthKeywordsSourceWood and Fiber Science. 49(1):93-104Year2017
- Typical indicators of rangeland health are used to describe health and functionality of a variety of rangeland ecosystems. Similar indicators may be applied to forested locations to examine ecological health at a local forest level. Four rangeland health indicators were adapted and applied to data compiled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program for research locations on the Fishlake National Forest in central Utah. These data can be used by local forest managers to determine the health status of...AuthorsMaggie Toone, Sara A. GoekingKeywordsSourceRes. Note RMRS-RN-76. - Northern Arizona University (NAU) faculty and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) foresters initiated a partnership to expose NAU School of Forestry (SoF) graduate students to tribal forest management practices by incorporating field trips to the 1.68-million acre Fort Apache Indian Reservation as part of their silviculture curriculum. Tribal field trips were contrasted and coconvened with field trips to national forests to allow students to gain a unique perspective of the specific differences, challenges, and diversity of management and silvicultural practices ongoing in Indian Country. - Leaf area index (LAI) is a key parameter to characterize vegetation dynamics and ecosystemstructure that determines the ecosystem functions and services such as cleanwater supply and carbon sequestration in awatershed. However, linking LAI dynamics and environmental controls (i.e., coupling biosphere, atmosphere, and anthroposphere) remains challenging and such type of studies have rarely been done at a watershed scale due to data availability. The present study examined the spatial and temporal variations of LAI for five ecosystem types within a watershed with a complex topography in the...AuthorsPeilong Liu, Lu Hao, Cen Pan, Decheng Zhou, Yongqiang Liu, Ge SunSourceScience of The Total EnvironmentYear2017
