Displaying 18,701 - 18,710 of 65,196 Publications- Documenting the environmental performance of building products is becoming widespread because of many green marketing claims made without scientific merit (i.e., green-washing). Developing environmental product declarations (EPDs) for building products is one way to accomplish this objective for scientific documentation and to counter green-washing (ISO 2006a; Bergman and Taylor 2011). LCI data are the underlying data for subsequent development of LCIAs and EPDs. EPDs are similar to nutritional labels for food. At present, there are many EPDs for North American structural wood products...AuthorsRichard BergmanKeywordsSourceCORRIM Final ReportYear2015
- There is a growing demand for material properties to be used as inputs in fi re behavior models designed to address building fire safety. This comparative study evaluates using the mass loss calorimeter as an alternative to the cone calorimeter for obtaining heat release rates of wood-based materials. For this study, a modified mass loss calorimeter utilized an improved heat release rates method that added four thermocouples install ed on a chimney wall above the coni cal heater in addition to the standard air them1opile at the chimney top. The cone calorimeter used the standard oxygen...AuthorsLaura Hasburgh, Robert H. White, Mark A. Dietenberger, Charles R. - Verifying national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories is a critical step to ensure that reported emissions data to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) are accurate and representative of a country's contribution to GHG concentrations in the atmosphere. Furthermore, verifying biogenic fluxes provides a check on estimated emissions associated with managing lands for carbon sequestration and other activities, which often have large uncertainties. We report here on the challenges and results associatedwith a case study using atmospheric measurements of CO2...AuthorsStephen M Ogle, Kenneth Davis, Thomas Lauvaux, Andrew Schuh, Dan Cooley, Tristram O West, Linda S. - Increased deposition of reactive atmospheric N has resulted in the nitrogen saturation of many forested catchments worldwide. Isotope-based studies from multiple forest sites report low proportions (mean = ~10%) of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate in streams during baseflow, regardless of N deposition or nitrate export rates. Given similar proportions of atmospheric nitrate in baseflow across a variety of sites and forest types, it is important to address the postdepositional drivers and processes that affect atmospheric nitrate transport and fate within catchments. In a meta-analysis of...AuthorsLucy A. Rose, Stephen D. Sebestyen, Emily M. Elliott, Keisuke KobaSourceWater Resources Research. 51(2): 1333-1352.Year2015
- 1.) Power analysis is an important step in designing effective monitoring programs to detect trends in plant or animal populations. Although project goals often focus on detecting changes in population abundance, logistical constraints may require data collection on population indices, such as detection/non-detection data for occupancy estimation. 2.) We describe the open-source R package, rSPACE, for implementing a spatially based power analysis for designing monitoring programs. This method incorporates information on species biology and habitat to parameterize a spatially explicit...AuthorsMartha Ellis, Jacob S. Ivan, Jody M. Tucker, Michael K. - Golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) are long-lived raptors that maintain nesting territories that may be occupied for a century or longer. Within occupied nesting territories there is one nest in which eagles lay their eggs in a given year (i.e., the used nest), but there are usually other nests (i.e., alternative nests). Conservation plans often protect used nests, but not alternative nests or nesting territories that appear vacant. Our objective is to review literature on golden eagle use of alternative nests and occupancy of nesting territories to determine if alternative nests are...AuthorsBrian A. Millsap, Teryl G. - The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) population at Voyageurs National Park (VNP) provides an opportunity to assess long-term temporal and spatial trends of persistent environmental contaminants. Nestling bald eagle plasma samples collected from 1997 to 2010 were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides. Trends of total PCBs, total DDTs, 4,40-DDE, and Dieldrin were analyzed since >50% of nestling plasma samples had detectable concentrations. Total PCBs, total DDTs, and 4,40-DDE concentrations have all decreased over time (26.09%, 24.09%, and 40.92%...AuthorsH. Tyler Pittman, William W. Bowerman, Leland H. Grim, Teryl G. Grubb, William C. - This research developed a chance-constrained two-stage stochastic programming model to support wildfire initial attack resource acquisition and location on a planning unit for a fire season. Fire growth constraints account for the interaction between fire perimeter growth and construction to prevent overestimation of resource requirements. We used this model to examine daily resource stationing budget requirements and suppression resource types and deployments within a fire planning unit. A chance constraint ensures the conditional probability of one or more fire escapes on days with...AuthorsYu Wei, Michael M. Bevers, Erin J. - Developing forest lands and agricultural lands for other uses has wide-ranging implications. Land development can affect production from forest and agricultural lands, wildlife habitat quality, the spread of invasive species, water quality, wildfire control, and infrastructure costs. In its attempts to mitigate these effects, Oregon implemented statewide land-use planning laws in the early 1970s. Washington established less prescriptive laws in the 1990s. Policymakers, land managers, and various interest groups want to know the effect these laws have had on land use. Scientists with the...AuthorsMarie Oliver, Andrew GrayKeywordsSourceScience Findings 172. - In 2013, we examined the effects of conophthorin on flight responses of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) tomultiple-funnel traps baited with ethanol in Georgia,Michigan, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Adventive species (¼exotic, nonnative, immigrant, introduced) accounted for 91.4% of total catches of ambrosia beetles. Conophthorin increased catches of Xyleborinus saxesenii (Ratzeburg) in Georgia, New Hampshire, and Oregon. Catches of Cyclorhipidion pelliculosum (Eichhoff) were increased by conophthorin in New Hampshire but not in Michigan. In Oregon, conophthorin...AuthorsDan Miller, K.J. Dodds, E.R. Hoebeke, T.M.
