This report describes one segmentation scheme that has been developed and used by the Tools for Engaging Landowners (TELE) program using National Woodland Owner Survey data. TELE divides landowners into four broad groups based on their reasons for owning land. - The South’s production of pulpwood decreased from 56.0 million cords in 2022 to 52.9 million cords in 2023. Roundwood production decreased by 3.3 million cords to 38.2 million cords and accounted for 72 percent of the South’s total pulpwood production. The use of wood residue increased by 1 percent to 14.7 million cords in 2023. Alabama and Georgia led the South in total production, with 8.9 and 8.5 million cords, respectively. - Homeowners’ willingness to pay for urban forest benefits can be inferred from hedonic property value studies, which use real estate transactions to estimate the elasticity between home value and tree canopy cover (i.e., the % change in home value for a 1 % change in tree cover). - This study surveyed dry kiln operations in the northeastern and north-central United States to understand current technology use and training needs. The research aimed to establish a better understanding of dry kiln production characteristics, prevailing tools and technology, and training requirements in the hardwood lumber drying industry to help providers better design training opportunities for the industry.
