With two UAVs, separate inspections following the proposed protocol were initially performed indoor to quantify the damage state of three concrete columns and four Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) beams. The protocol using the two UAVs was also adopted to inspect an in-service four-span timber bridge in Pipestone, Minnesota in the United States. During damage identification,...AuthorsEuiseok Jeong, Junwon Seo, James WackerKeywordsSourceExpert Systems with Applications journalYear2022
- Bamboo is among the short-rotation and dedicated energy crops which serve as lignocellulosic feedstock for future bio-refinery. A pilot scale microwave fractionation system (PMFS) was developed and used for the organosolv fractionation of bamboo sawdust. The key component of the system, a 1000 L microwave-heating reactor, was designed with unique features for high efficiency of microwave energy utilization and uniform temperature distribution. More than 800 kg reactant can be heated at 65% energy efficiency with temperature differences between top and bottom reactor positions of less than...AuthorsYongjian Zhang, Thomas L. - Water use in the United States reached its lowest level in 2015 in at least four decades. National trends, however, mask local challenges throughout the U.S. In some places, decreases in surface water use were more than offset by increases in groundwater use, leading to net increases in total withdrawals. Other places have seen increasing rates of water shortages caused by mixes of socioeconomic and climate forces. This study examines recent trends in freshwater use and makes projections in future freshwater use over the next 50 years. Projections are based on socioeconomic and climate...AuthorsTravis Warziniack, Mazdak Arabi, Thomas C. Brown, Pam M. - Robust ecological forecasting of tree growth under future climate conditions is critical to anticipate future forest carbon storage and flux. Here, we apply three ingredients of ecological forecasting that are key to improving forecast skill: data fusion, confronting model predictions with new data, and partitioning forecast uncertainty. Specifically, we present the first fusion of tree-ring and forest inventory data within a Bayesian state-space model at a multi-site, regional scale, focusing on Pinus ponderosa var. brachyptera in the southwestern US. Leveraging the complementarity of...AuthorsKelly A. Heilman, Michael C. Dietze, Alexis A. Arizpe, Jacob Aragon, Andrew Gray, John D. Shaw, Andrew O. Finley, Stefan Klesse, R. - The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) is a global standard for ecosystem risk assessment that integrates data and knowledge to document the relative risk status of ecosystem types as critically endangered (CR), endangered (EN), and vulnerable (VU). A series of indicators for each type gauge the probability of range wide "collapse". Climate change vulnerability can factor into RLE assessments, especially as indicators of climate change severity under the criteria for environmental degradation over the recent and upcoming 50 years. We applied a new framework to assess climate change vulnerabi...AuthorsPatrick J. Comer, John Hak, Patrick McIntyreKeywordsSourceLandYear2022
- Wildfire is an influential driver of social and ecological change that calls for adaptive governance on federal lands. We identify supporting and limiting elements of adaptive governance in the context of wildfire management on the Deschutes National Forest (DNF). We use key findings to propose actions and leverage points to increase the US Forest Service’s ability to engage in adaptive governance. Our research suggests that key supporting elements of adaptive governance within the Forest Service are generally found at the local scale. These supportive elements can be tapped to shed...AuthorsEmily Platt, Susan Charnley, John D. Bailey, Lori A. CramerKeywordsSourceSociety & Natural Resources. 155(1): 1-19.Year2022
Frequency of disturbance mitigates high-severity fire in the Lake Tahoe Basin, California and Nevada
Because of past land use changes and changing climate, forests are moving outside of their historical range of variation. As fires become more severe, forest managers are searching for strategies that can restore forest health and reduce fire risk. However, management activities are only one part of a suite of disturbance vectors that shape forest conditions. To account for the range of disturbance intensities and disturbance types (wildfire, bark beetles, and management), we developed a disturbance return interval (DRI) that represents the average return period for any disturbance, human...AuthorsCharles Maxwell, Robert M. Scheller, Jonathan W. Long, Patricia N. ManleySourceEcology and Society. 27(1): 21Year2022- High-resolution historical climate grids are readily available and frequently used as inputs for a wide range of regional management and risk assessments including water supply, ecological processes, and as baseline for climate change impact studies that compare them to future projected conditions. Because historical gridded climates are produced using various methods, their portrayal of landscape conditions differ, which becomes a source of uncertainty when they are applied to subsequent analyses. Here we tested the range of values from five gridded climate datasets. We compared their...AuthorsM.A. Stern, L.E. Flint, A.L. Flint, R.M. Boynton, J.A.E. Stewart, Jessica W. Wright, J.H. - Aim: A full annual cycle approach to conservation and understanding of regional population trends requires an understanding of migratory connectivity. We present tracking data on the eastern whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus), a Neotropical migrant that has declined by 70% in recent decades. When and where populations of this species are limited throughout the annual cycle is poorly understood. Location: Breeding area: midwestern United States; passage area and winter area: midwestern/southern United States, Mexico, Central America. Methods: We utilized data from 52 archival GPS tags...AuthorsAaron A. Skinner, Michael P. Ward, Ian Souza‐Cole, James R. Wright, Frank R. Thompson, Thomas J. Benson, Stephen Matthews, Christopher M. - Effective species conservation requires understanding environmental effects on stage-specific demographics driving population change. Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) is an early-successional shrub-obligate species that has experienced long-term, range-wide declines due to fire suppression, agricultural intensification, and sprawling development. Local habitat features and landscape context may interactively influence vital rates. Management affects food, cover, and other resources available locally, while surrounding landscapes often determine degree of isolation and predator...AuthorsEmily A. Sinnott, Frank R.
