- Anisotropy and temperature dependence of structural, thermodynamic and elastic properties of crystalline cellulose Iβ were computed with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) and a semi-empirical correction for van der Waals interactions. Specifically, we report the computed temperature variation (up to 500 K) of the monoclinic cellulose Iβ lattice parameters, constant pressure heat capacity, Cp, entropy, S, enthalpy, H, the linear thermal expansion components, ξI , and components of the isentropic and isothermal (single crystal) elastic stiffness matrices, CS ij (T ) and CT ij...AuthorsShunLi Shang, Louis G. - The authors conducted a review of ultrasonic testing and evaluation of wood and wood products, starting with a description of basic ultrasonic inspection setups and commonly used equations. The literature review primarily covered wood research presented between 1965 and 2013 in the Proceedings of the Nondestructive Testing of Wood Symposiums. A table that lists the wood species used in the reviewed studies is included.AuthorsChristopher Adam Senalik, Gregory Schueneman, Robert J. - This report summarizes information on condition assessment of in-service wood, including visual inspection of wood and timbers, use of ultrasound and probing/boring techniques for inspection, and assessment of wood and timbers that have been exposed to fire. The report also includes information on assigning allowable design values for in-service wood.AuthorsRobert H. White, Robert J. RossKeywordsSourceFPL-GTR-234Year2014
- This work presents the development of dry spun cellulose acetate (CA) fibers using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as reinforcements. Increasing amounts of CNCs were dispersed into CA fibers in efforts to improve the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the fiber. A systematic characterization of dispersion of CNCs in the polymer fiber and their effect on the nanocomposites’ mechanical properties is described. The birefringence, thermal properties, and degree of CNC orientation of the fibers are discussed. 2D X-ray diffraction was used to quantify the degree of CNC alignment within the...AuthorsSi Chen, Gregory Schueneman, R. - Leaching of biocides is an important consideration in the long term durability and any potential for environmental impact of treated wood products. This chapter discusses factors affecting biocide leaching, as well as methods of evaluating rate and quantity of biocide released. The extent of leaching is a function of preservative formulation, treatment methods, wood properties, type of application and exposure conditions. Wood properties such as permeability, chemistry and heartwood content affect both the amount of biocide contained in the wood as well as its resistance to leaching. A...AuthorsStan LebowKeywordsSourceIn Deterioration and Protection of Sustainable Biomaterials; Schultz, T., et al.; ACS Symposium Series; American Chemical Society: Washington, DC, 2014; http://pubs.acs.org Publication Date (Web): June 10, 2014; pp. 239-254.Year2014
- A thorough analysis of the kraft pulping process makes it obvious why it has dominated for over a century as an industrial process with no replacement in sight. It uses low-cost raw materials; collects and regenerates over 90% of the chemicals needed in the process; and is indifferent to wood raw material and good at preserving the cellulose portion of the wood, the part that provides strong fibers. Although the process is odiferous, extremely capital intensive, and very poor at preserving hemicellulose yield, no alternatives have been able to replace it for process cost and product...AuthorsAlan W. - There is a need to develop improved accelerated test methods for evaluating the leaching of wood preservatives from treated wood exposed to precipitation. In this study the effects of rate of rainfall and length of intervals between rainfall events on leaching was evaluated by exposing specimens to varying patterns of simulated rainfall under controlled laboratory conditions. Lumber specimens were pressure-treated with 0,5; 1 or 2,% solutions of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) and exposed to 762 mm of rainfall at rates of 2,5; 8 or 25 mm/h. Intervals between rainfall events were increased...AuthorsStan LebowSourceMaderas. Ciencia y tecnología Volume 16, Number 4: 2014; pp. 423 - 434.Year2014
- The white rot basidiomycete Ceriporiopsis subvermispora delignifies wood selectively and has potential biotechnological applications. Its ability to remove lignin before the substrate porosity has increased enough to admit enzymes suggests that small diffusible oxidants contribute to delignification. A key question is whether these unidentified oxidants attack lignin via single electron transfer (SET), in which case they are expected to cleave its propyl sidechains between Cα and Cβ and to oxidize the threo-diastereomer of its predominating β-O-4-linked structures more extensively than the...AuthorsDaniel J. - As engineers begin to estimate life-cycle costs and sustainable design approaches for timber bridges, there is a need for more reliable data about their durability and expected service life. This paper summarizes a comprehensive effort to assess the current condition of more than one hundred timber highway bridge superstructures throughout the United States. This national study was jointly administered by the Forest Products Laboratory and the Federal Highway Administration. In depth inspections were conducted using visual and non-destructive evaluation techniques to characterize the...AuthorsJames Wacker, Brian K. Brashaw, Thomas G. Williamson, P. - An inexpensive, rapid method for measuring the rheological properties of yield stress fluids is described and tested. The method uses an auger that does not rotate during measurements, and avoids material and instrument-related difficulties, for example, wall slip and the presence of large particles, associated with yield stress fluids. The method can be used for many types of yield stress fluids, including concentrated lignocellulosic biomass. Sample preparation prior to measurement is minimal, reducing, or eliminating disruption of the sample. We show that measurements using this...AuthorsJoseph R. Samaniuk, Timothy W. Shay, Thatcher W.
