- Cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)–cellulose nanofibril (CNF) hybrid organic aerogels were prepared using an environmentally friendly freeze-drying process. The resulting PVA/CNF aerogel was rendered both superhydrophobic and superoleophilic after being treated with methyltrichlorosilane via a simple thermal chemical vapor deposition process. Successful silanization on the surface of the porous aerogel was confirmed by various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and contact angle...AuthorsQifeng Zheng, Zhiyong Cai, Shaoqin GongSourceJournal of Materials Chemistry AYear2014
- Wood is perhaps the quintessential material used in most human cultures. In prehistoric times, it was employed, either directly or indirectly, to provide most human needs: warmth, shelter, and nearly all manner of tools suitable for procuring food, water and security (Beeckman, 2003). In modern times it continues to play important roles in human cultures (Radkau, 2012). Despite its ubiquity as a technological material, it is often a surprise to the general public, and even to other biologists, that xylaria, or collections of wood specimans, exist.AuthorsAlex C. - The application of anthraquinone (AQ) as a pulping catalyst has been well documented in scientific studies and mill applications. AQ is known to increase the rate of delignification, enabling a reduction in pulping time, temperature, or chemical charge and an increase in pulp yield. Specific details of AQ use are not extensively reviewed in this work. The review focusses instead on the critical milestones in the AQ process life cycle including its initial introduction, investigation of the reaction mechanism and evaluation of best use by the pulping industry. The importance and difficulty...AuthorsPeter W. Hart, Alan W. - Covered timber bridges are historic structures with unique aesthetic value. To preserve this value and maintain bridges in service, robust evaluation of their performance and safety is necessary. The strength of the timber found in covered bridges can vary considerably, not only because of age and condition, but also because of species and grade. For the practicing engineer or inspector evaluating a covered bridge, design values for existing wood members must be determined with as much accuracy as possible by accounting for bridge-specific conditions. The current practice is to assign wood...AuthorsAlex C. Wiedenhoeft, David E. - Understanding the effect of expanding wood energy markets is important to all wood-dependent industries and to policymakers debating the implementation of public programs to support the expansion of wood energy generation. A key factor in determining the feasibility of wood energy projects (e.g. wood boiler or pellet plant) is the long-term (i.e. 20-30year) supply outlook for raw materials. Long-term supply of wood for energy, in turn, is directly affected by long-term demand from various markets using wood fuel for alternative demands (e.g. traditional wood industries).AuthorsKenneth E. - The corrosion of metals in contact with wood has been studied for over 80 years, and in most situations wood is not corrosive [1]. Recently, however, the durability of fasteners in preservative--treated wood has become a concern. Changes in legislation and certification in the United States, the European Union, and Australasia have restricted the use of chromated copper arsenate (CCA), which was previously the most extensively used waterborne wood preservative [2, 3]. Following these changes, several different wood preservatives have come to the market, some of which are much more corrosive...AuthorsSamuel L. - This paper describes the current state of the U.S. economy and provides general and statistical information on forest products markets in terms of production, trade, consumption, and prices. Market developments are described for sawn softwood, sawn hardwood, softwood log trade, wood-based panels, paper and paperboard, fuelwood, forest product prices, and housing starts. Policy initiatives that can affect domestic markets and international trade in wood products are also discussed in some detail. Data are provided through the end of 2012, with estimates for 2013 and forecasts for 2014.AuthorsJames L. Howard, David B. - Raman spectroscopy with its various special techniques and methods has been applied to study plant biomass for about 30 years. Such investigations have been performed at both macro- and micro-levels. However, with the availability of the Near Infrared (NIR) (1064 nm) Fourier Transform (FT)-Raman instruments where, in most materials, successful fluorescence suppression can be achieved, the utility of the Raman investigations has increased significantly. Moreover, the development of several new capabilities such as estimation of cellulose-crystallinity, ability to analyze changes in cellulose...AuthorsUmesh P. - Stress wave velocity has been traditionally regarded as an indicator of the extent of damage inside wood. This paper aimed to detect internal decay of urban trees through reconstructing tomographic image of the cross section of a tree trunk. A grid model covering the cross section area of a tree trunk was defined with some assumptions. Stress wave data were processed beforehand to obtain the propagation velocity and the coordinate values. An image reconstruction algorithm for detecting internal decay was proposed based on an interpolation method, which estimated the velocity values of...AuthorsHailin Feng, Guanghui Li, Sheng Fu, Xiping WangKeywordsSourceBioResources, Volume 9, Number 2, 2014; pp. 3248-3263Year2014
- Short cellulose nanofibrils (SCNF) were investigated as reinforcement for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers. SCNF were mechanically isolated from hard wood pulp after enzymatic pretreatment. Various levels of SCNF were added to an aqueous PVA solution, which was gel-spun into continuous fibers. The molecular orientation of PVA was affected by a combination of wet drawing during gel spinning and post-hot-drawing at a high temperature after drying. A maximum total draw ratio of 27 was achieved with various SCNF contents investigated. The PVA crystal orientation increased when small amounts of...AuthorsJun Peng, Thomas Ellingham, Ronald C.
