- This study conducted an investigation of the effect of lignosulfonate (LS) on enzymatic saccharification of lignocelluloses. Two commercial LSs and one laboratory sulfonated kraft lignin were applied to Whatman paper, dilute acid and SPORL (sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocelluloses) pretreated aspen, and kraft alkaline and SPORL pretreated lodgepole pine. All three lignin samples inhibited cellulose saccharification of Whatman paper, but enhanced the saccharification of the four lignocellulosic substrates. The level of enhancement was related to the molecular weight...AuthorsHaifeng Zhou, Hongming Lou, Dongjie Yang, Junyong Zhu, Xueqing QiuKeywordsSourceInd. Eng. Chem. Res. - To understand the influence of formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratio on the properties of urea–formaldehyde (UF) resins, this study investigated hardness of cured UF resins with different F/U mole ratios using a nanoindentation method. The traditional Brinell hardness (HB) method was also used for comparison. The HB of cured UF resin films with different F/U mole ratios was determined after exposing the films to different post-curing temperatures. The nanoindentation method was employed for these films to measure Meyer hardness (HM) and reduced modulus (Er) which have been used to calculate...AuthorsByung-Dae Park, Charles R. - The cone calorimeter is widely used for the determination of the heat release rate (HRR) of building products and other materials. As part of an effort to increase the availability of cone calorimeter data on wood products, the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory and the American Wood Council conducted this study on composite wood products in cooperation with the Composite Panel Association and APA-The Engineered Wood Association. We tested the specimens in accordance with ASTM E 1354 and used a heat flux of 50 kW/m2. The twenty-nine commercial wood composites included untreated and fire-retard...AuthorsRobert H. - The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films was characterized using novel experimental techniques complemented by molecular simulations. The characteristic birefringence exhibited by CNC films was utilized to calculate the in-plane CTE of selforganized and shear-oriented self-standing CNC films from room temperature to 100 °C using polarized light image correlation. CNC alignment was estimated via Hermans order parameter (S) from 2D X-ray diffraction measurements. We found that films with no preferential CNC orientation through the thickness (S: ~0.0)...AuthorsJairo A. Diaz, Xiawa Wu, Ashlie Martini, Jeffrey P. Youngblood, Robert J. - This study revealed that cellulose enzymatic saccharification response curves of lignocellulosic substrates were very different from those of pure cellulosic substrates in terms of optimal pH and pH operating window. The maximal enzymatic cellulose saccharification of lignocellulosic substrates occurs at substrate suspension pH 5.2-6.2, not between pH 4.8 and 5.0 as exclusively used in literature using T. reesi cellulase. Two commercial cellulase enzyme cocktails, Celluclast 1.5L and CTec2 both from Novozymes, were evaluated over a wide range of pH. The optimal ranges of measured suspension...AuthorsT.Q. - We studied the high temperature performance of soy meal processed to different protein concentrations (flour, concentrate, and isolate), as well as formulated soy-based adhesives, and commercial nonsoy adhesives for comparison. No thermal transitions were seen in phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) or soy-phenol-formaldehyde (SoyPF) or in as-received soy flour adhesive during differential scanning calorimetry scans heating at 10 °C/min between 35 and 235 °C. Heat flow rates decreased in the order soy flour (as received) > SoyPF > PRF > emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI). In thermogravimetri...AuthorsJane O'Dell, Christopher G. Hunt, Charles R. - A bundle of a few loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) cells are moisture-activated torsional actuators that twist multiple revolutions per cm length in direct proportion to moisture content. The bundles generate 10 N m kg1 specific torque during both twisting and untwisting, which is higher than an electric motor. Additionally, the bundles exhibit a moisture-activated, shape memory twist effect. Over 70% of the twist in a wetted bundle can be locked-in by drying under constraint and then released by rewetting the bundle. Our results indicate that hemicelluloses dominate the shape fixity mechanism...AuthorsNayomi Plaza, Samuel L. Zelinka, Don S. Stone, Joseph JakesKeywordsSourceSmart Mater. - This paper describes the current state of the U.S. economy and provides general and statistical information on forest products production, trade, consumption, and prices. Market developments are described for sawn softwood, sawn hardwood, softwood log trade, wood-based panels, paper and paperboard, fuelwood, forest product prices, and housing starts. Policy initiatives that can affect domestic markets and international trade in wood products are also discussed. Data are provided through the end of the year 2011 with estimates for 2012 and forecasts for 2013.AuthorsJames L. Howard, David B. - Acoustic technologies have been well established as material evaluation tools in the past several decades, and their use has become widely accepted in the forest products industry for online quality control and products grading. Recent research developments on acoustic sensing technology offer further opportunities to evaluate standing trees and logs for general wood quality and intrinsic wood properties. Although the concept of using acoustic velocity as an effective measure of stiffness applies to both standing trees and felled logs, the method typically used to measure acoustic velocity...AuthorsXiping WangKeywordsSourceWood Sci Technol Volume 47, 2013; pp. 965-975.Year2013
- Throughout the United States, hundreds of tornados and several hurricanes affect people’s livelihoods each year. These natural disasters not only cause structural damage to property, they also cause numerous injuries, and regrettably, far too many deaths of people caught in their path. In an effort to increase the probability of surviving the strong winds and associated flying debris of these ferocious storms, a number of Americans are installing safe rooms in their homes.AuthorsJames Bridwell, Robert J.
