- Ground-contact durability of stakes treated with acidic copper formulations was evaluated. All test formulations incorporated copper, dimethylcocoamine and propanoic acid; one set of formulations also included zinc. Sapwood stakes cut from the southern pine group were pressure-treated to a range of retentions with each formulation and placed into plots within Harrison Experimental Forest in Mississippi and compared with untreated stakes and chromated copper arsenate-treated stakes. Stakes were inspected and given a visual condition rating after 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 years. Most stakes at...AuthorsStan Lebow, Bessie Woodward, Steven Halverson, Michael WestKeywordsSourceInternational Biodeterioration & Biodegradation 70(2012) 74-78Year2012
- Essential oils and their derivatives might be one of the promising preserving agents to prevent funga ldecay and termite/insect attack in wood since such compounds have a long history of safe usage as antimicrobial agents in various industries. Considerable research has focused on utilizing bioactive essential oils and wood extractives based on green technologies to develop environmentally friendly wood preservatives. This study evaluated biological activities of storax from Liquidambar orientalis tree, some storax constituents and commercial styrax against wood-decaying fungi, mold fungi,...AuthorsS. - Following the 2010 publication of Measuring Wood Specific Gravity… Correctly in the American Journal of Botany, readers contacted us to inquire about application of wood density and specific gravity to biomass research. Here we recommend methods for sample collection, volume measurement, and determination of wood density and specific gravity for use in biomass studies. We include discussion of the effects of wood deterioration and reliance on published density metrics. In addition, we note pitfalls associated with standard methods, limitations of using densities in biomass estimates, and...AuthorsG. Bruce Williamson, Michael C. - Physical, mechanical, and fire properties of the injection-molded wood flour/polypropylene composites incorporated with different contents of boron compounds; borax/boric acid and zinc borate, and phosphate compounds; mono and diammonium phosphates were investigated. The effect of the coupling agent content, maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene, on the properties of the composites with fireretardant was also investigated. The composites with the zinc borate had the highest dimensional stability and strength in the bending, tensile, and izod impact, followed by the monoammonium phosphate,...AuthorsNadir Ayrilmis, Turgay Akbulut, Turker Dundar, Robert H. - Uniform fibers composed of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with progressively increasing contents of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), up to 41 wt% CNCs, have been successfully produced by electrospinning. The morphological, thermal and nanomechanical properties of the composite sub-micron fibers were investigated. The CNCs derived from wood pulp by sulfuric acid hydrolysis were well dispersed in solutions of PMMA and the processing solvent N,N-dimethylformamide prior to fiber formation. Well-formed fibers with controllable diameters were generated reproducibly at all CNC contents...AuthorsHong Dong, Kenneth E. Strawhecker, James A. Snyder, Joshua A. Orlicki, Richard Reiner, Alan W. - This paper examines phase transformations of water in wood and isolated wood cell wall components using differential scanning calorimetry with the purpose of better understanding "Type II water" or "freezable bound water" that has been reported for cellulose and other hydrophilic polymers. Solid loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) milled pine, and holocellulose, cellulose, and lignin isolated from the same parent board were tested. For each sample preparation, the freezing and melting of water was examined at 10–20 different moisture contents. Only one freezing peak was observed for most sample...AuthorsSamuel L. - A combined hydrolysis factor (CHF) was developed to predict xylan hydrolysis during pretreatments of native aspen (Populus tremuloides) wood chips. A natural extension of previously developed kinetic models allowed us to account for the effect of catalysts by dilute acid and two sulfite pretreatments at different pH values. When xylan is modeled as two fractions with different hydrolysis rates, previously identified as fast and slow xylan, the model closely matches the experimental data. Extent of xylan hydrolysis is strongly correlated with pretreatment solids yield, energy consumption...AuthorsW. Zhu, Carl J. Houtman, Junyong Zhu, Roland L. Gleisner, K.F. - Protocols are developed to assess viscoelastic moduli from unloading slopes in Berkovich nanoindentation across four orders of magnitude in time scale (0.01-100 s unloading time). Measured viscoelastic moduli of glassy polymers poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, and polycarbonate follow the same trends with frequency (1/unloading time) as viscoelastic moduli generated from dynamic mechanical analysis and broadband viscoelastic spectroscopy but are 18-50% higher. Included in the developed protocols is an experimental method based on measured indent area to remove from consideration...AuthorsJoseph Jakes, Rod S. Lakes, Don S. StoneKeywordsSourceJ. Mater. - The relationship between hardness and flow stress in glassy polymers is examined. Materials studied include poly(methylmethacrylate), polystyrene, and polycarbonate. Properties are strongly rate dependent, so broadband nanoindentation creep (BNC) is used to measure hardness across a broad range of indentation strain rates (10-4 to 10 s-1). Molybdenum (Mo) is also studied to serve as a “control” whose rate-dependent hardness properties have been measured previously and whose flow stress, unlike the polymers, is pressure insensitive. The BNC hardness data are converted to uniaxial flow...AuthorsJoseph Jakes, Rod S. Lakes, Don S. StoneKeywordsSourceJ. Mater. Res.Year2012
- Historic covered bridges and current timber bridges can be vulnerable to damage from biodeterioration or fire. This guide describes procedures for selecting and applying in-place treatments to prevent or arrest these forms of degradation. Vulnerable areas for biodeterioration in covered bridges include members contacting abutments, members near the ends of bridges subject to wetting from splashing and members below windows or other openings that allow entry of wind-blown precipitation. Pressure-treated timber bridge members can be vulnerable when untreated wood is exposed by field fabricati...AuthorsStan Lebow, Grant T. Kirker, Robert H. White, Terry Amburgey, H.
